I want to lose body fat and get fit but I have social events coming upโ€ฆ hold my wine!

This is something I hear all the time.

There is never going to be the perfect time to start prioritising your health & fitness.

Thereโ€™s unlikely going to be a period of time when you donโ€™t have any social occasions coming up.

On top of this I would argue that getting in shape when you have a busy social life is going to be more beneficial.

This is because you will learn how to navigate social events whilst staying on track with your fitness goals, which we will be invaluable.

Myself and all of the people I work with still maintain a social life whilst still getting in shape.

Hereโ€™s how we approach meals out:

1. Calorie Bank - save calories from the meals leading up to a social event/ meal out to allow more flexibility for the event.

2. Ensure protein target/ veg intake is high the rest of the day so you arenโ€™t starving when go out for food.

3. Ensure activity level stays high - still training if itโ€™s a training day and hitting step count.

4. Enjoy the meal but but donโ€™t over do it- enjoy some good food without losing all control.

5. Straight back to usual routine - Not overcompensating for overindulging or dragging out the indulgence because you โ€˜might as wellโ€™ now youโ€™ve started.

Having basic principles to stick will enable you to stay on track without be overly restrictive.

At the end of the day we are wanting to improve health and having a social life is part of having overall health. Therefore your health/fitness shouldnโ€™t come at the expense of your social life.

STOP telling yourself youโ€™ve failed already.

So January might not have gone to plan.

You might have started with the intention of training 5 times per week and youโ€™ve managed 2 sessions one week then 1 the next.

You probably told yourself youโ€™re going to eat less and cut down on the crappy foods, but every evening youโ€™ve been finishing off the chocolate and sweets leftover from Christmas.

(Iโ€™ve only just finished the Toblerone I got in my stocking, you know one of the BIG ones! It was staring me out every time I opened the cupboard.)

As a result youโ€™re left feeling frustrated and demotivated.

Youโ€™re telling yourself youโ€™ve fallen short of the UNREALISTIC plan you set yourselfโ€ฆ

AND that youโ€™ve โ€œFAILEDโ€ because you havenโ€™t completely changed your lifestyle or transformed your body yet.. and itโ€™s only been a month!

This is the problem.

What you need to do instead is:

1. Be realistic - Look at what you are doing now (nutrition, activity level, training, sleep, hydration) & set yourself realistic targets this month which you can then improve on incrementally throughout the year.

2. Put things into perspective - Itโ€™s been one month. Youโ€™ve not failed your New Yearโ€™s resolution when there is another 11 months of the year left.

Once you do these things instead of beating yourself for constantly not achieving the ridiculous targets / plan you set yourself, youโ€™ll be:

- Making gradual improvements.

- Feeling better about yourself because youโ€™re completing what you set out to do.

- Building momentum month after month.

- Less likely to say โ€œIโ€™ve failedโ€ and revert back to old ways.

Once you do this youโ€™ll start building sustainable habits which over the next few months will enable you to LOOK, FEEL & PERFORM back at your best!

I have heard this a few times.

Personal Training will always have its place & be right for a lot of people.

I started off my career as a personal trainer, I worked with some amazing clients & helped them get some great results.

However, having worked with clients face to face & online, I believe online coaching actually works better for a lot of people.

If youโ€™re someone who:

- Has some gym experience.
- Needs flexibility/convenience regarding when they train.
- Requires more help & guidance outside of the gym (habits, nutriton, etc).
