It’s with a heavy heart that I share this news.
Gary Hunter, who founded the Colchester branch and remained a vital part of NoTanx for many years, passed away two weeks ago.
In accordance with the wishes of his wife, Jo, I’ve waited until now to post this.
Those who had the privilege of meeting Gary were undoubtedly inspired by his words and his passion for life. And even those who didn’t know him personally have felt his influence—his wisdom continues to echo through every course we run, and we still quote him regularly.
Gary lived life to the full, embracing joy and adventure at every turn. One of my favourite quotes of his was: “To improve, you must break your rhythm and step outside your comfort zone.” He once illustrated this by challenging another instructor’s running routine—saying that simply jogging around the park won’t push you forward. Instead, break the pattern: chase a dog, climb a tree mid-run—do something unexpected.
That mindset is a powerful metaphor we can carry into all areas of life. It’s also a core philosophy of NoTanx training: don’t settle into routines, don’t be afraid to shake things up. Step beyond the familiar. Live boldly—and never be afraid to look over the edge.
