If your training goal is just ‘get better at my sport’…. You really don’t have a goal🤷🏽‍♂️

Over the past couple of months, I’ve spoken with loads of athletes, all at different stages of their seasons (American football season starting, rugby season finishing up etc.)

When I ask “What’s your training focus right now?” the most common answer I hear is:
👉 “Improving in my sport.”

The problem? That’s way too vague. If your focus isn’t specific, your progress won’t be either.

Sorry to break it to you too, A LOT of athletes scream out for ‘sport-specific training’ but the reality is, you are already practicing your sport. What most really need is general preparation, there is 0 reason to overcomplicate it because you have seen a random exercise from your favourite athlete😒

That’s why I break training down into a clear order of priorities; with these being based on the qualities I believe actually shift performance🤝🏽

I’ve been a bit quiet during the BUCS season, but here’s a reminder a lot of athletes need to hear:

Cut the fluff.

Social media will have you thinking training needs to be complex and ‘sport-specific’ 24/7. It doesn’t.

Unless you’re competing at the very top level, there’s usually a lot of low hanging fruit being ignored.

I had one of my athletes ask me today why she’s still got squats in her programme… she’s been doing them since September.

That’s exactly the problem.

Athletes get bored of the basics before they’ve actually mastered them.

The biggest adaptions come from doing the basics really well.

If your movement is poor and your strength isn’t there, ‘sport-specific’ work won’t fix it, it will expose it 🤷🏽‍♂️

Move better.
Get stronger.
Then earn the right to go sport-specific🤝
