As we welcomed in a new season and began our first week back at The Chilton Flooring Arena, it was time to see if all the hard work during pre-season, along with the lessons learned from our friendlies, could transfer into the competitive side of the game.
There have been some big changes to the squad over the summer, with three of last season’s four award winners moving on to local rivals. That made our first competitive fixture against West Kilbride an intriguing test for this new-look Bonnyton side.
With a full squad to choose from, it was a difficult decision to pick the starting eleven, but we went with a good balance of familiar faces and new additions.
We started the game slowly and found ourselves behind early on after needlessly giving possession away and failing to clear our lines. With a new squad, we wondered how the boys would respond — and fortunately, the response was a very positive one.
For the remainder of the first half, Bonnyton enjoyed some good spells of possession, although we struggled to create any real clear-cut chances. At half-time, we went into the break 1–0 down.
The message was simple: keep working hard and the rewards will come.
The second half was a much-improved performance. We matched West Kilbride Colts physically across the pitch and began to put them under increasing pressure.
That pressure eventually paid off when we won a free kick. Following some nice passing and a lively through ball from Jude, Elliot picked the ball up on the edge of the box, beat two players and calmly slotted the ball low into the goalkeeper’s right-hand corner to bring us level.
We continued to press and again found our reward.
This time, Jude got on the end of a through ball and drove towards the front post. With the goal in sight, he could have taken the shot himself, but instead showed great awareness and unselfishly picked out Robert at the back post, who made no mistake and slotted home to put Bonnyton 2–1 ahead.
West Kilbride continued to push for an equaliser, but some strong physical defending, along with excellent sweeper-keeper positioning from Connor, prevented them from creating any real clear-cut opportunities.
As the clock ticked down, West Kilbride had one final chance from a free kick. Thankfully for us, the effort sailed wide and the referee blew the final whistle.
A fantastic team performance, a great response from the boys and, most importantly, a well-deserved three points!

A brilliant start to competitive football from a new-look Bonnyton side. There is plenty still to work on, but the attitude, effort and togetherness shown today were exactly what we wanted to see.
