MONTANE SUMMER SPINE // Hut 2 and the final 7 miles πŸ“· Clorroe | Photography & Creative Media

The last push. A notorious section.

Looking at the map, the final 7 miles seem like a stone's throw away from the finish line at Kirk Yetholm. But the reality on the ground is this section is punishing. Descending into Hut 2 from Auchope Cairn at 743m, runners then have to face The Schil - the final moorland ascent, sitting at 605m.

The huts across this section are the only places of respite, the exposed nature of the Cheviots resulting in continuous weather changes. It's only moorland cows and the hardy wild goats of the Cheviots seen grazing in these parts.

But, between it all, it's one of the most beautifully serene places to welcome runners in - the beginning of the end of their Montane Spine Race journey.

MONTANE SUMMER SPINE // Bellingham πŸ“· Clorroe | Photography & Creative Media

Bellingham CP is starting to see more of our Spiners make their way through today, the last stop to access drop bags and any limited comfort. Our checkpoint teams are providing a very warm welcome as they make their way in, ready with a smile and the infamous feet buckets.

With the wet underfoot and weather conditions, swinging between rain and sunshine, the humidity is very much on the rise - ideal for blisters to make an appearance, with globalexpeditionmedics doing an incredible job of keeping our runners on the go.

MONTANE SUMMER SPINE // Hadrian's Wall start and end πŸ“· Clorroe | Photography & Creative Media

While news of Ed's incredible win spreads, our front runners have been battling over another notorious section of the Pennine Way this afternoon - Hadrian's Wall. Relentless undulations and rocky trails, that soon accumulate on sleep deprived legs.

Catching our women's race front runner Jenny, she can confirm Hadrian's got a lot to answer for.

MONTANE SUMMER SPINE // Alston πŸ“· Clorroe | Photography & Creative Media

Spine stories from the night have been circulating among runners over Debi Jones for breakfast - reports of falls, wild horses, news of the departed and blister taping techniques.

Distance to Bellingham 38 miles.

Hadrian's Wall to conquer first.

At 893 metres, Cross Fell is the highest point on the Pennine Way and, as usual, it's making its presence known. The cloud has been intermittently down, with showery spells and a cold wind that feels very different from the warmth of today's lower sections.

The fatigue is really starting to set in at this point, with reports of hallucinations - a tarmac road on Cross Fell, eyes in the floor and yellow brick roads. Runners are falling asleep on their feet, shouting to stay awake and keen to get to Alston for some rest.

Although not everyone made it to Alston before sleep forced a stop...

MONTANE SUMMER SPINE // Pen-y-ghent and beyond πŸ“· Clorroe | Photography & Creative Media

Having been through night one, and followed by the sun across today, Spine runners are reporting the first signs of fatigue.

Making their way over Fountains Fell, the Pen-y-ghent scramble and down into Horton-in-Ribblesdale, it's been a day of undulations. A feeling echoed by the Spine experience itself.

Soon, the sun will set and night two will close in...

MONTANE SUMMER SPINE // Approaching Wessenden πŸ“· Clorroe | Photography & Creative Media

Twenty six miles and the front runners were pushing hard across the Pennine Way. At Black Hill, there was still a spring in their strides, with runners reporting fresh legs.Β

With the sun out, spirits were high. However, the underfoot conditions are going to be testing over time, after weeks of rain - the ground is saturated.

The bogs are deep.Β

The rhythm of the Montane Spine Race is beginning to settle in.

MONTANE SUMMER SPINE // Day one Clorroe | Photography & Creative Media

The 2026 Summer Montane Spine Race is underway,Β  with the weather setting a tone earlier today. Through the morning, runners pushed into torrential rain and freezing winds, the trail water logged. Within an hour, the clouds lifted, the sun appeared and the same stretch of Snake Pass was suddenly transformed.Β

This is the Montane Summer Spine.
