Heavy rain over-night had as all thinking this game would not go ahead, but somehow Cale’s pitch was spared the worst of the rain, and the game was given the green light. Little did we know what we were about to witness.
1st half: Kick off!
The deadlock was broken 5 mins in as Medda defending a corner cleared the ball and Nife picked it up and released a defense splitting pass from halfway for Dylan to run onto, glide past the keeper and tuck it away. Great start; 1 nil Medda!
A few mins later Medda were on the attack again, but this time the Cale defence broke it up and cleared the ball, only for it to fall to Evan who controlled the ball and from 40 yards hit a “howitzer” over the head of the keeper into the net, 2 nil Medda!
Cale responded by breaking down the right wing and from the resulting pull back cross, they smashed home their 1st goal.
A couple of mins later, Nife was pressing the Cale defence and raced onto an under-hit back pass and smashed the ball into the top left corner, 3 – 1 to Medda!
Once again Cale came back at Medda and broke down the right side again and scored from the resulting cross to bring them back to within 1 goal, 3 – 2 Medda.
The game continued to ebb and flow like a classic cup-tie and then Medda broke through into the box and drew a foul, Penalty! Dylan stepped up and slotted it into the bottom corner, Medda’s 2 goal cushion restored!
Medda were getting plenty of attacks now and from a free-kick on the halfway line, Cale cleared and launched a decisive counterattack that saw them claw it back again to 1 goal, 4 – 3 Medda.
A few mins later, John launched a long throw down the right wing over the defence and Nife bullied his way through and slid a pass inside the box for Dylan to tap-in for his hat-trick, 5 – 3 Medda!
The remaining 15 mins of the half produced no more goals, but sadly our keeper injured his hand while bravely defending a Cale attack. This was a huge turning point in the game as John took over the gloves for Medda going into the 2nd half.
2nd half – Kick off (5 – 3 to Medda)
In the 1st 10 mins of the half, Medda were working the ball down the right from a throw-in. Dylan picked up the ball from some slack Cale defending and slid-through a beautiful pass from the edge of the box for Nife to run onto and chip the keeper to make it 6 – 3 Medda!
Then everything changed.
Cale picked up the ball in midfield and launched a pass over our defence, with the attacker breaking down the left wing, our sub-keeper John rushed out to help his defence and unfortunately brought the attacker down, resulting in a red card. Medda now scrambled for a 3rd keeper in the game and Holden stepped in to take over the gloves. We had just under 30 mins to go with a 3-goal lead to hold onto, a huge ask for the boys as we only had 1 sub now available to swap things around.
Cale smelled blood and scored a quick brace of goals as our boys adjusted to the new look defence and with 20 mins to go, they brought it back to 1 goal.
The reaction from the boys was excellent, they dug deep and fought bravely all over the pitch. As Cale pushed for the equaliser, our defence repelled another attack and Nife picked up the ball on our own 18-yard line. What followed was nothing short of brilliance, Nife powered forward down the left wing breaking a couple of tackles to slot home a left foot strike into the opposite corner for his hat-trick, 7 – 5 to Medda!
A few mins later it got even better for Medda, the Cale keeper took a free kick from just outside his box that was met by an Alfie Kennedy bullet header that setup Dylan brilliantly to break through the high line Cale defence and slot home his 4th goal of the game, 8 – 5 to Medda with 10 men!!
There were only a few mins left on the “official” time but there had been stoppages, so who knew how much injury time was going to be played.
Our boys were showing signs of tiredness now, having played so much of the 2nd half a man down and Cale took full advantage as they launched balls at our back line and broke down the flanks.
Cale scored in the 78th min and sadly scored a further brace in injury time to sn**ch a draw from the Medda boys after they fought so bravely. A cruel end to the game for our boys.
For the neutral, this game had everything, lots of goals, wonder strikes, penalties, red cards etc. A huge thanks to all the family / guardians who turned out on a horrible day to support the boys, I hope you enjoyed the entertainment.
C’mon the Medda!
