In 1995-96, after a long process (6+ years), IRC managed to secure £373,459 grant funding and the necessary permissions to build a new boathouse. Photo 1 - design drawings by Architect, Steve Atkinson from Wellington. Photo 2 - the previous clubhouse being demolished. Photo 3 - the new boathouse under construction in 1997. Photo 4 - the earthworks for the new access track (previous access to the club was via Dale End Park). The clubhouse still stands strong today and hopefully will do so for many more years to come!

IRC Maiden Fours 1928 winners: Back row (left to right)- R. Onslow (stroke), J. Dorsett, W. Rickets (coach), F. Rickets (3), F. Lloyd. Kneeling (left to right)- B. Dorsett (2), E. Fletcher (bow). Ironbridge Gorge Museums Trust have been searching through their archives for us and have come up with some absolute treasures. First off, this photograph of IRC members, dated 1880-1910, standing in front of IRC’s first boat club, which was situated on Bower Yard, on the south bank of the river, just upstream from the Iron Bridge. The man second from the right, seated on the ground, is believed to be James Vellacott Rawle, who lived at Wharfage House (now the Riverside B&B) in Ironbridge.

Here’s another great item from Ironbridge Gorge Museums Trust’s archive. This is an invitation to an IRC dance that IRC’s longest ever serving Captain (1880-1914), Francis Rawdon Smith, hosted on January 13th 1891, at the Madeley Institute. The invitation was designed by Charles Henry Temple, who was a designer at Maw & Co, the famous tile factory in Jackfied.

This photograph shows the busy river banks of the 1963 IRC regatta. 130 years earlier, on 13th August 1883, IRC held its first ever regatta, featuring races between local rivals from Bridgnorth and Bewdley, as well as a coracle race, goose race(!), athletics event, brass bands and more! IRC’s past Presidents, Captains, Vice-Captains, Secretaries and Treasurers are all listed on this plaque. IRC’s first Captain was W.Y. Owen, who started his tenure the year the Club was founded in 1870. We can find little about him, but he is believed to be Cr. Sergeant William Yate Owen of the Sixth Shropshire Rifle Corps. Owen was a formidable shooter, and won two Queen’s Badges as well as the St George’s Cross for his efforts. Who knows how good a rower he was, but he was IRC’s Captain for seven years and helped set up the Club all those years ago, so we think he deserves a medal for that too!

The weather might not be great today, but at least we’re not in the winter of 1916-17. This photo, from February 1917, shows the River Severn completely frozen over and a group enjoying some unusual recreation beside the IRC boathouse. I can’t imagine there was much rowing that winter!

The weather might not be great today, but at least we’re not in the winter of 1916-17. This photo from February 1917 shows the River Severn completely frozen over, and a couple enjoying some unusual recreation beneath the Iron Bridge. I can’t imagine much rowing took place that winter!

This past weekend, it usually would have been IRC’s annual summer regatta. Here’s a selection of past regatta programmes from the years 1952, 1956 and 1965. Whilst the design might be slightly different from what we produce today, the content remains the same - details of the competing clubs, the draw, race rules and so on. Here’s to many more IRC regattas in the years to come.
