Listening to your team is vital when building and maintaining strong relationships.

But given all the listening we do, we only really hear or remember between 25-50%.

So that means when a member of your team is telling you something important to them, you pay attention only for half the time at the most.

Think about everything you are missing out on.

Becoming a better listener can improve your productivity as well as your ability to persuade, influence or negotiate.

It also helps you to avoid conflict and misunderstandings.

So the best way to improve this is to ACTIVELY LISTEN.

Pay attention - undivided attention

Show you are listening - nod, smile, acknowledge

Provide feedback - clarify points, reflect back what you have heard

Defer judgement - don't interrupt

Respond appropriately - be candid, open and honest

It takes time and practise to become a great active listener, give it a go and see what difference it makes in your relationships.

Comment below to let me know what difference it makes to you.

Change your life by doing these simple habits.

Make sure you get enough sleep and rest.

If you are tired all the time you are not going to have the energy or motivation to work towards your goals or achieve the life you want.

You should listen to your body, when it needs rest and sleep and allow yourself to have that time.

You should also remember to give yourself mental rest, let yourself relax, watch tv, listen to music, spend time with friends, whatever makes you switch off and enjoy.

If you are feeling in a low mood, don't feel like you are being weak in giving it and taking time out, you need it. You will recover quicker if you allow yourself the time you need.

Start observing and paying attention to when you want rest, you will start to notice whether it is because you are tired or whether you feel tired when really you are procrastinating, or just being lazy.

Remember rest and recuperation can be a task on your to do list as well.

If you struggle to switch off, then take it in small incremental steps, 5 min extra break today, 10 mins tomorrow. Take small incremental step until it feels right.

Change your life by doing these simple things daily.

Follow the 80:20 rule.

Focus the majority of your time on the things that will get you to your goals.

That doesn't mean not doing things outside of work, as I'm sure your friends, family and whatever you enjoy doing are part of your goals.

What is your number one goal right now?

Promotion to a more senior role
Starting your own business
Having more freedom
Learning a new skill

Focus 80% of your time towards whatever that goal is and I'm sure you'll get there sooner than you think.

Change your life by doing these simple things every day.

If you have things to do and they will take 5 mins or less, then do them straight away.

Don't write them on a to do list for later, that will almost take as long as doing it now.

If you leave it, like an email for example then you have to try and find it later when you go back to it, making it a harder task that it already was.

It also just adds to your mental clutter, yet another thing in your mind that you know you have to do.

So make your life easier and do it now!

Change you life by doing these simple habits everyday.

Create a morning routine

By prioritising self care in the morning you will set yourself up for the day in a positive way.

You will wake up looking forward to the day rather than dashing around and getting up last minute already stressed.

You should add in whatever makes you happy into your morning routine.

Exercise
Reading
Sitting quietly with a coffee
Time with the kids playing
Listening to music or a podcast
Walking the dog
Meditating

There is no right or wrong, it is whatever will make you start the day with a smile and a positive mindset.

Change your life by doing these simple things every day.

Planning your day either the night before or in the morning before you begin work is a great habit for productivity.

It will help increase productivity as you will be able to focus on tasks and prioritise, getting the most of of your day.

It will stop you from procrastinating, if you follow your plan of what you have to do, you can just get on with the tasks rather than thinking and delaying.

Taking small steps forward everyday by completing tasks will get you to your goal quicker, just think if you have 20 great days in a month where you complete all your things to do, you are 20 steps closer to your big goal. You don't need to worry about achieving everything every day as long as you are achieving some days and ticking things off your list.

Don't wait for perfection to do your tasks, you will be waiting a long time as it is very unlikely that you will ever think it is perfect. You will always find another excuse.

Prioritise the one thing daily that will get you closer to your goal.

It's also a good idea to get everything ready in advance, like tidying up in the evening, putting out your clothes for the morning, getting your lunch ready, prepping things for the kids etc. It will make your life easier and quicker.

Retaining great talent

With the amount of people who have moved jobs this year, team retention has to be a top priority.

Some companies offer more money, more perks, more flexibility, remote working but really these do not address the issue long term.

People have spent so much time in the past couple of years reassessing what is important to them, that fulfilment and future opportunities are high on the priority list right now.

So what's the key to retention?

Succession planning

Identify and develop your future leaders now, and those who can step up behind them

Put a plan in place to get them to the next level
-Look at training and development programmes
-Consider who might need coaching and mentoring

Review your company culture
- does it align with your plans to develop
- do you regularly give and receive feedback, so everyone knows where they stand
- do you ask your team what their future goals are

It won't be a fix all but it will give you a solid foundation for the future and also demonstrates to your team that you are invested in them now and in the future.

How are you dealing with retention, drop a comment below?

Many people have preconceptions about what a leader is.

Leadership is not a position or job title, anyone in any position can develop leadership skills. Leadership is qualities and behaviours.

Don't assume because all is quiet, that everyone is happy. A good leader will always ask questions that prompt team to give feedback as some people may not always feel comfortable in highlighting an issue upfront.

To be an effective leader, you should have a strong understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses and recognise how teamwork is the key to success. There is always room for growth at every level, if you don't have the answer be, honest and the go and find the answer, the importance of collaboration.

Leading your first or a new team

1. Observe them in their roles, work alongside them and understand their experience and how they react to changes
2. Build trust, you might want to make changes but until the team trust you and understand your reasoning they are unlikely to buy-in to the changes
3. Get to know them personally, what do they do outside of work, what are there likes and dislikes, let them get to know you too
4. Find out how they feel about feedback and what works for them best, how do they like to present their feedback as well as receive it

70% of managers and leaders say that meetings are unproductive and pointless. 😒

1. Stick to a strict time limit - they do not need to run all day with lunches and coffee breaks
2. Send out the agenda ahead of time - allowing people to digest it and plan ahead to come prepared
3. Agree clear actions - as well as who is going to take the action and complete by when
4. Don't use meetings for updates - they can be sent by email or newsletter
5. Don't invite too many people - it is hard to have a good conversation with too many opinions and voices.

DM me to chat about how you can improve your career or get ready for that next step
