Saturday match report - penultimate game of the season. 😞
Arriving on a four-game winning streak and chasing promotion, Hayle 3rds looked strong favourites on paper. Thankfully, here at Porthleven we play on (admittedly parched) grass. And, despite missing a few of our regular players, we were determined to make a game of it... so when “Singles Club" Ian and Freddy racked up 100 for their opening partnership, we were well on our way. The ball was zipping around on a bone-hard outfield, and we did our best to take advantage. Finishing on a season’s-best total of 195 for 6 (Freddy top-scoring on 56), we felt pretty good about our chances.
Hayle, however, had other ideas – racing to our total in just 24 overs with 5 wickets down, before young Josh Blyth set the seal on things by smashing a towering six. (To be honest, we're still not sure if the ball has come down yet, so be careful if you're in the vicinity.) Guest Star Francis Hood and Pete Sincock took two wickets each, but these guys are league title contenders for a reason. Still, another exciting game to watch and be part of, lots of runs scored, and once again played in a good spirit. Hopefully we gave our guests a bit more of a game than they were expecting.
Ultimately, cricket was the winner. Oh wait, no. Hayle were.
No match this weekend: our season finale is Saturday 29th August, at home to Praze. Put the date in your diary, because it should be a cracker – we struggled with the bat in the reverse fixture, so we're keen to give a much better account of ourselves this time around.
