Swimming lessons aren't just about learning what to do in the water – they're also a great opportunity for children to develop important social skills.

In our small group lessons, children learn to take turns, listen to instructions, encourage others and learn alongside their fellow swimmers.

They can celebrate each other's achievements and build confidence interacting as part of a group.

Floats provide extra buoyancy and support, which can make it easier for children to maintain their body position while they concentrate on kicking, arm movements or breathing.

Take the float away and suddenly they need to manage balance, buoyancy, coordination and technique all at once, so it's completely normal for swimming to feel more difficult.

That's why we gradually reduce support as confidence and skills develop, helping children learn to move through the water independently when they're ready.

Swimming gets the whole body working together, requiring children to coordinate their arms and legs, control their breathing, maintain balance and respond to their surroundings – often all at the same time!

Regular physical activity such as swimming can also support concentration, memory and learning, making time in the pool beneficial for much more than developing swimming skills.

Another great reason to get children confident and active in the water from an early age!

Learning to float is one of the most important water safety skills a child can develop, which is why we introduce it from a young age at Brightwater.

If a child unexpectedly falls into water or becomes tired while swimming, being able to roll onto their back, keep their face clear of the water and float can give them valuable time to stay calm, control their breathing and call for help.

By practising floating regularly from an early age, it can become a familiar and instinctive response rather than something children have to think about in an emergency.

Swimming is about much more than learning strokes. Moving through water gives children a different way to experience their body – helping them explore balance, coordination, movement and where their body is in relation to the space around them.

For SEND swimmers, developing this body awareness can be an important part of building confidence and becoming more comfortable and independent in the water.

Our dedicated SEND swimming classes provide a supportive environment where lessons can be adapted around each swimmer, allowing them to learn and progress at a pace that works for them.

A Common Mistake we see is kicking from the knees instead of the hips.

When children are learning to swim, it’s common to see lots of bending at the knees as they try to kick themselves through the water.

For an effective flutter kick, the movement should start from the hips, with relatively straight but relaxed legs and a small, natural bend at the knee.

This creates a smoother, more efficient kick and helps keep the body in a better position in the water.

Why Do We Blow Bubbles Underwater?

Blowing bubbles might seem like a simple bit of fun, but it’s actually an important part of learning to swim!

Teaching children to gently breathe out when their face is in the water helps them develop control with their breathing, become more comfortable with putting their face underwater and prepare for the breathing patterns they'll eventually use when swimming different strokes.

It can also help children stay relaxed, rather than holding their breath and becoming tense.

So, those bubbles you see during swimming lessons? They’re all part of building confident, capable swimmers!

To children, it looks like they're just having fun. But through play, they're developing some of the most important swimming skills they'll ever learn.

Games and playing with water toys in the pool help children relax, build trust in the water, improve coordination, practise breathing, and develop confidence without even realising they're learning.

When children are engaged and enjoying themselves, they're often more willing to try something new and overcome challenges.

That's why play is such an important part of our lessons at Brightwater.

One of the biggest milestones in learning to swim isn't swimming a length... it's feeling confident enough to put your head under the water.

For many children, this can take time, and that's completely normal. We never rush the process. Instead, we build confidence through fun, games and gentle encouragement, helping every swimmer reach this milestone when they're ready.

That first smile after going underwater is a moment worth celebrating though!
