The season has started in fine style. In spite of several holidays and also non Bowls related injuries affecting our teams, we have had positive results.
The Benacre League is enjoying life back in Div 2 after promotion last year. Despite a 1-6 defeat at Hales we have had victories away at Lowestoft Railway B 5-2 in the opening game and last night a 6-1 result at Beccles Caxton. With a bye night in week 2 we finally start our home fixtures next Monday against Oulton Broad 6.45 start.
The Bob Wright has also made an excellent start with the most recent result being a win against Peasenhall.
The Sunshine team’s one result in Div 5 is very familiar winning on two of the three rinks but losing by 1 shot overall. Their fixture last week was prematurely postponed by our visitors because of heavy rain in the morning although the afternoon was sunny and the Finn team played in the evening in excellent conditions. We have started with a positive vibe in the Finn. New players are being blooded in competitive matches whilst results have been good. On paper three defeats in the Halesworth League Cup group stage appears disappointing but our group contains most of the leading first division sides and the losses have been by narrow margins.
Finally we entertained Somerleyton in the Marie Curie Cup. Unfortunately we lost a very enjoyable game which means we drop into the Plate. Of more importance we raised £60 from our players for the charity with obviously more to come at the next game.
Thursday’s Finn match has been postponed with our opponents’ permission as several members (including your scribe) will be cheering our good neighbours Halesworth Town FC on at Portman Road as they strive to beat Mutford and Wrentham in the Senior Cup Final. We wish them every success after a very memorable first season in non league football.

Our matches commenced with our debut in the Finn Trophy with a narrow defeat at the difficult Saxmundham green. The team gained one point which is notable as this league is designed to allow less experienced players a chance of competitive action.
On Monday we started our Benacre Div 2 season at Lowestoft Railway B following promotion last year. We have found our opponents a bit of a bogey team recently in all types of encounter. It was very pleasing therefore to gain a 3 shot victory obtaining a 5-2 points result.
Last night we started the Bob Wright with a 5-1 win at home over Leiston which contrasts with last year’s 0-6 defeat in the equivalent game last year.
All in all this is an encouraging start but with a number of established players missing over the next couple of weeks we face a challenging period which will both stretch our resources but also allow our less experienced players a chance to shine.
Finally I’d like to praise our greensman Nick for preparing a decent surface given adverse weather conditions. We usually like to avoid rain but we could do with some at the moment coupled with warmer weather which will promote grass growth.
The next posting will be delayed because your scribe is on a bowls tour next week. Until then enjoy your bowls and if you want to join us come to our roll ups on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 2pm.

The Pavilion now branded “Lyceum” is now open for the INK Festival and will remain so until and including Sunday. This means that it will be rather busy at Dairy Hill particularly on Saturday when the football club plays their final league game of the season against Stanway Pegasus.
Next week we return to normal and open our own season with our inaugural match in the Finn Trophy on Thursday evening away to Saxmundham. The following week starts with the Benacre Div 2 on Monday again away, this time playing Lowestoft Railway B. We finally start our home programme on Wednesday 29th April in the Bob Wright with a home game against Leiston.

It’s finally here!
The green will open this Saturday 11th April. The normal organised roll up will take place. Players wishing to sign in must do so before 2pm. There should be plenty of room for those just wishing to practice on adjoining rinks.
Please note that our facilities will be restricted leading up to and during the INK festival the following weekend. The festival takes place from Thursday 16th to Sunday 19th during which entry to the Pavilion will not be possible for bowlers.

Whilst most of our new projects are designed to improve facilities at the club, we are also aware that we need to look to the future.
The club, assisted by Active Suffolk, has purchased two complete sets of “Bowls buddies” equipment. This is designed to introduce younger children to Bowls.
Yesterday I had the honour of attending a special assembly at Holton Primary School where we were able to present them with the first of these sets. We hope that they and the second recipients will find them of great use and enjoyment, whilst providing educational benefits. It was nice to discover that more than expected had heard of us and looked forward to the opportunities Bowls might provide.
The second set will be presented next week.

First proper cut of the year, perhaps Spring is finally just around the corner.

At the AGM in November I described (as Chairman) support for our fundraising sub-committee but voiced some frustration with the results to date. However this was somewhat disingenuous and premature.
Subsequently we have heard about success on a number of fronts. The total amount pledged is into five figures and will help restore and improve our facilities whilst broadening our appeal to all ages. Over the next few weeks I will report on progress, describe each project in turn and thank our very generous donors as their donations are distributed.
In the meantime, as a non profit making charity, all donations will be very carefully allocated and as Chairman I would again reiterate the club’s gratitude for this fantastic support for our club and more generally for sport in the town.
Thanks!

So we’ve passed the shortest day so thoughts will soon turn to the opening of the green in the Spring. I even have a crocus blooming in my back garden!
On this Christmas Day we wish you season’s greetings and a happy new year.
The (slightly delayed)club quiz takes place on 7th January, all members welcome. The following Tuesday will see, what is becoming a tradition, with a group visit to Posh Pigs at Ellough for breakfast followed by a day at the World Bowls in Hopton.
Looking forward we have another visit from the Blues Band before the Pavilion becomes a theatre as part of the Ink Festival. Details to follow.
We have been successful in our application to join the Finn Trophy which is a Thursday evening 3 bowl league where we intend giving competitive experience to inexperienced bowlers to compliment our Sunshine team in the afternoon. Our opponents are Yoxford, Peasenhall, Saxmundham, Leiston, Sweffling, Tunstall, Wickham Market and Easton.
We have been drawn away to Wrentham in the Junior with no sign of a home game whatever the result.
Unfortunately both Kessingland and Wrentham have withdrawn from the Halesworth League which leaves an awkward 11 teams remaining. The League is urgently looking for a 12th team so if your club is anywhere in the Halesworth area and wants a few additional games please let Amy Finch or me know and we’ll hook you up. You’ll get 13 matches plus a Cup Semi Final and Final if you’re successful so we are able to cope with Senior and Junior Cup clashes on Friday evenings.

The AGM was successfully held recently with a good attendance. This Thursday afternoon we celebrate Ted Barham’s 90th birthday with a fish and chips afternoon at 2pm in the Pavilion. Any member wishing to attend who has not previously stated their intention to do so please contact Mick Burnside asap. This also applies if you are no longer able to attend.
Finally, we have been successful in our application to join the Finn Trophy. This means that our leagues next year are as follows:-
Monday - Benacre Div 2
Wednesday - Bob Wright
Thursday afternoon - Sunshine (whether Div 4 or a new Div 5 tba.)
Thursday evening - Finn Trophy (northern section?)
Friday - Halesworth League, probably Div 2
Ok I lied, one last thing the Junior Cup draw was made recently and we are away to Wrentham with the winners visiting Loddon Swan.
