Tough Day for the Lads

We started strong and created a few early chances, but a flag happy lino kept Rushden in the game flagging 3xs that ran through the back line but you get teams like that.

For the second week running, Rushden faced 10 men early for goal keeper reds, Ollie was sent off just 10 minutes in for handling a back pass and denying a goalscoring opportunity.

We reshaped and stayed disciplined for the rest of the half. Rushden hit the bar once after the restart but otherwise failed to really test Ryan, who stepped in between the sticks after Ollie’s dismissal. Credit to the lads for keeping their shape — Rushden struggled to make their extra man count.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Rushden still limited in their attacking threat. A scrappy corner led to their opener, and although we created a few half-chances, our forwards were often left isolated.

We went down to nine men temporarily when a player got sin binned, but again the lads dug in. A late penalty made it 2–0 when our left-back stood on their attacker’s foot in the box.

Given the shortage in squad numbers and playing the majority with ten men, it was a resilient display that could have been very different against stronger opposition.

Plenty of positives in the effort and attitude — we’ll regroup and look forward to the reverse fixture. Great spirit, great banter on the sidelines, and proud of the lads for battling right to the end.
