🧠 LEARN | Basketball is a team game — with and without the ball

🏀 HEAD UP. PASS. MOVE. CREATE SPACE.

This weekend gave our players a brilliant opportunity to learn what basketball feels like against another team.

Both of our teams are very new to competitive basketball, so this week isn’t about dwelling on the score.

It’s about asking:

What did the game teach us?

One clear lesson came on offence.

At times we spent too long dribbling with our heads down. When that happens, it’s difficult to see teammates, defenders or the space developing around us.

So this Wednesday our challenge is:

👀 HEAD UP — see the whole court
🏀 PASS — trust your teammates
🏃 MOVE — don’t stop playing after the pass
↔️ CREATE SPACE — give the player with the ball somewhere to attack

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your team happens after you’ve given the ball away.

That is exactly what we’re trying to develop at Gunners: players who don’t just execute a skill, but can see the game and make decisions together.

Parents —> Ask your player after training: “What did you do after you passed the ball?”

🏀 THANK YOU — GUNNERS ON THE ROAD! 🔴⚫⚪

A huge thank you to everyone who supported our U12 and U14 @ @ in yesterday’s friendly against the New Forest Novas.

Firstly, thank you to all of our parents and families. Getting young players onto court takes much more than simply turning up for tip-off — it takes lifts, time, organisation, encouragement and plenty of support from the sidelines. We really appreciate you giving up part of your weekend to give the players the opportunity to compete and develop.

To our Gunners players — well done. 👏 It was brilliant to see both teams out representing the club. Friendlies like this are an important part of learning: testing ourselves against different players, making decisions under pressure, learning from mistakes and discovering what we need to work on next. Most importantly, we saw plenty of effort, teamwork and players supporting one another.

Thank you as well to New Forest Novas for inviting us and being such welcoming hosts. We really appreciate the opportunity to play and look forward to getting our two clubs together again in the future.

Games like this are about much more than the final score. They give our young players the chance to grow in confidence, learn how to compete and put into practice everything we are developing at training.

Very proud of everyone who represented the Gunners. ❤️🏀

🏀 “BUT I’VE NEVER REALLY PLAYED BASKETBALL…”

That’s absolutely fine.

One of the things we want new players to discover at Gosport Gunners is that basketball isn’t just about being able to dribble brilliantly or score lots of baskets.

It’s also about learning to:

👀 find space
🏃 move
🤝 help a teammate
🧠 make decisions
💪 keep trying
😁 and enjoy playing as part of a team.

Those are things children can begin learning from their very first session.

Our coaching is built around games and challenges, with players developing from their own starting point rather than needing to arrive as a finished basketball player.

So if your child has been watching basketball, playing at school, shooting at a hoop in the park — or simply fancies trying a different team sport — we’d be happy to hear from you.

📩 Message Gosport Gunners to find out more about coming along and trying basketball with us.

🧡💙 Work Hard. Think Team. Play Together.

The best play isn’t always on the scoresheet

🏀 NOTICE THE TEAMMATE WHO MADE IT POSSIBLE

This week at Gunners, we’re noticing something easy to overlook.

Not just the player who scores.

Not just the player who makes the pass.

But the teammate whose movement created the space for it.

That might be the player who cuts sharply and draws a defender.

The teammate who shifts position to make a pass easier.

The player who moves out of a congested area rather than following the ball.

Or simply someone who keeps moving and stays involved after they’ve passed.

Those small actions don’t show up on a scoresheet — but they make teams better.

And they’re exactly the behaviours we want our players to recognise and value in each other.

This season we’re developing basketball players, but we’re also building a culture where contributing to the team’s success matters as much as individual recognition.

That’s THINK TEAM.

🧡💙 Work hard. Think team. Play together.

🧠 LEARN | You don’t need the ball to affect the game

🏀 HOW CAN YOU HELP THE PLAYER WITH THE BALL?

One of the biggest steps young basketball players make is realising that they can influence the game without touching the basketball.

That’s our challenge at Gunners this week.

When a teammate has the ball, can you:

👀 SEE where the space is?
🏃 MOVE away from your defender?
🙌 SHOW your teammate a clear target?
🧠 READ what your defender is doing?
🏀 And if you don’t receive the pass… can your movement still help somebody else?

Our younger players will explore different ways of getting free through games, changes of direction and lots of 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 basketball.

Our more experienced players will add different cuts and begin to recognise an important basketball clue:

What did my defender just tell me?

If they deny one route, perhaps they’ve opened another.

It’s another small part of learning to SEE THE GAME — because good basketball isn’t five players watching one person dribble.

It’s five players thinking and playing together.

🧡💙 Work Hard. Think Team. Play Together.

🏀 🏀 HAS YOUR CHILD EVER WANTED TO TRY BASKETBALL?

September is a brilliant time to start.

At Gosport Gunners, children don’t need to arrive already knowing how to play.

We help them learn.

Our sessions use lots of games, small-sided basketball and challenges designed to help players build skills, confidence and an understanding of the game.

And alongside basketball we’re trying to develop something bigger:

Commitment. Teamwork. Empathy. Respect.

Whether your child has never picked up a basketball before or already spends every spare minute shooting hoops, we’d love to help them develop.

🏀 A GREAT START TO THE NEW SEASON

This week our Gunners were challenged to play with their heads up.

Not just Can you dribble?

But:

👀 What can you see?
🏀 Where is the space?
🤔 What could you do next?

The best bit wasn’t seeing perfect dribbling.

It was seeing players try things, make mistakes, adjust and go again.

That’s exactly what we want.

At Gunners we coach through games, decisions and questions. Training should be active, enjoyable and challenging, with players increasingly learning to solve basketball problems for themselves. That approach is central to our club strategy: developing commitment, teamwork, empathy and respect alongside the player.Warriors Basketball

Great work, Gunners.
