A question we get asked a lot: will the course definitely run?

Yes. We don't cancel courses. Whatever the weather brings, we adapt and deliver.

That might mean adjusting the route to stay in sheltered terrain. It might mean using poor conditions as a live classroom for weather and risk management — skills you can't learn any other way. What it never means is a refund email the morning you were due to arrive.

Because here's the truth: the mountains in any weather will teach you something. And the skills we're building — navigation, campcraft, movement, decision-making — work in sun and in mist.

A few things people ask before booking:
- Do I need to be fit? Reasonably active will do just fine.
- What if I have no outdoor experience? That's exactly who this course is for.
- What do I bring? A full kit list is provided on booking.

Here's exactly what's included in the Lake District Wild Camp Taster Session. No hidden extras, no gear to buy.

Everything is provided:
- Tent and all camping equipment
- Sleeping mat and food for the expedition
- Maps and compass (and training on how to use them)
- Expert Mountain Leader qualification — the gold standard in UK mountain safety

Here's what you'll learn over 2 days:
- Map and compass navigation in real mountain terrain
- Route planning and decision-making on the move
- Wild camp site selection, pitch technique and Leave No Trace
- Weather awareness and how changing conditions affect your plans
- Mountain movement — reading terrain, managing your energy

The course runs in small groups of maximum 6 people. That's deliberate. Enough to share the experience, small enough that you get real attention and real learning — not just a guided walk.

You'll need to make your own way to the Lake District and arrange your own accommodation for the evenings (we can advise). Everything else is covered.

Something shifts when you're moving through open country under your own steam. ❄️

The worries of the week fade out. The noise drops. You start paying attention to different things — the feel of the ground underfoot, the way the light changes as a cloud passes, the satisfaction of reading a map and knowing exactly where you are.

And then you reach camp. You built that route. You're sleeping in a spot you chose. You cooked your own meal as the sky changed colour around you.

Here's the truth about the Wild Camp Taster Session: it's designed for people who have never done anything like this before. That's the whole point. You don't need experience. You need curiosity and the willingness to try something genuinely new.

Our groups are small — max 6 people. Our Mountain Leaders are fully qualified and endlessly patient. And the Lake District will do the rest.
