Rangers have been hit with a major injury setback after manager Derek McInnes confirmed captain Lawrence Shankland is facing between three and four months on the sidelines due to a 2cm hamstring tear.

The 31-year-old striker pulled up early during Saturday’s 1-0 win over Motherwell, suffering a recurrence of a similar injury he sustained at Hearts last season. Shankland is currently in London undergoing specialist follow-up scans to determine whether surgery is required. While surgery could extend his recovery timeline slightly, McInnes noted it may significantly reduce the risk of future recurrence.

The skipper’s absence is a severe blow for both club and country. In addition to missing crucial Premiership and League Cup fixtures—including back-to-back clashes against Celtic—Shankland will be unavailable for Scotland’s Nations League campaign through November under new head coach Sebastien Pocognoli.

With Daisuke Yokota also sidelined for Wednesday's match against St Mirren with a groin injury, McInnes will turn to Ryan Naderi, summer signing Kevin Kelsy, and Bojan Miovski to lead the line.

Motherwell have failed in their attempt to overturn a £5,000 fine imposed by the Scottish FA following the fallout from May's dramatic 3-2 defeat to Celtic at Fir Park.

An SFA appeal panel upheld the financial penalty against the club, which was issued over a social media video captioned "as the world of football mocks our game" following John Beaton's late VAR-assisted handball award against Sam Nicholson.

However, former Steelmen midfielder Elliot Watt—who signed for Turkish side Samsunspor earlier this summer—gained partial relief. His initial four-game ban for labelling the incident "the worst VAR decision in history" on X has been cut to a two-match immediate suspension, with two games suspended until the end of next season.

Both charges fell under Rule 72, which prohibits public criticism of match officials that implies bias or incompetence.

Was the SFA right to hold firm on Motherwell's fine, or was the original VAR decision fair game for criticism? Drop your thoughts below! 👇

🚨 Former Rangers and Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton will remain in custody until his trial next year after his latest application for bail was refused.

Barton, 44, is accused of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent on former Prescot Cables manager Kevin Lynch during an alleged incident near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club in March.

His trial was due to begin last week but has now been postponed until March 2027. Barton will have spent around a year on remand by the time proceedings begin.

He denies the charge.

🚨 RANGERS FEAR SHANKLAND COULD MISS REST OF 2026

Rangers reportedly fear captain Lawrence Shankland may not play again this year after suffering a serious hamstring injury against Motherwell.

The striker was forced off after just eight minutes of Saturday’s 1-0 victory at Ibrox and could miss around 15 matches, including the upcoming double-header against Celtic.

The Ibrox club are now anxiously awaiting the results of a scan to discover the full extent of the injury.

A massive potential blow for Rangers and Derek McInnes. 🤕

Here is how the Scottish Premiership table looks following today’s action!

Celtic stretch their lead at the top to five points after making it five wins out of five with a 2-1 comeback win over St Mirren in Paisley.

Despite that setback, St Mirren remain in 2nd place on 10 points, holding second spot on goal difference ahead of Rangers, who picked up a 1-0 win against Motherwell at Ibrox.

At the bottom end, Kilmarnock finally got off the mark by picking up their first point of the campaign in a goalless draw at Pittodrie against Aberdeen.
