We’re delighted to once again be hosting the Garsington Memorial Tournament, this Sunday at Denton Lane!

Travelling away to unbeaten, top of the table Frieth, Gaerse Dun knew they had a game on their hands.

Losing the toss and put in to bat, things didn’t start well. Opener, Armstrong was caught behind in the third over, and whilst Joel Barwise looked good, disaster struck in the 9th over as he went down with a suspected re-dislocation of his knee.

Kumar and Lee-Paskin started to rebuild with some good shots, which brought the first change just before drinks. A tricky left-hand spinner came on and was getting the ball to sing, and Lee-Paskin had one do a lot on him as he edged behind for 21.

Wakefield and Kumar then set about steadying the mid-overs, and pushed on to second drinks. Wakefield fell in the 32nd looking to accelerate with Gaerse on approx 120 from 32. This opened the door for Justin Sammuller to do what he does best. Playing with just one hamstring, Sammuller sent balls flying, with Kumar at the other end bringing up his 50. Not long after so did Sammuller, playing at a 2-250 strike rate. In the end, they both fell, but Gaerse set a great score of 213.

In reply, things couldn’t have gone much better. Josh Swadling struck first, taking Frieth’s danger man in his first over for a duck. The next 15 overs had one of the greatest displays of bowling you’ll possibly see from Josh & Peter Cole, as they unequivocally dismantled a Frieth side who are known for their strong batting. Twice, Josh sent the off stump flying out of the ground, with one ball swinging away and nipping back in off the surface, much to the surprise of the Frieth #5 who had decided to leave it.

By this point, a large number of children and adults from the neighbouring camp site had set up chairs to watch on, and it’s safe to say they favoured the men in green. Mexican waves, chants, cheers and more came from their direction, as Frieth looked on in shock at the level of energy in the Gaerse side.

As the last wicket fell, taken superbly by Cole, the Garsy boys sprinted together in delight. Handshakes with the opponents preceded a walk over to the spectators as they thanked them for their support.

Gaerse had one job to do, and they did it. A real statement win.

After a poor all round performance last week against Chinnor, Gaerse were denied the opportunity to bounce back in the league by rain. That meant they had to wait until Sunday, in the Osberton Radiator Cup to do so.

Having won v Westcott a few weeks prior, Gaerse were playing in the winners cup. Having won the toss and elected to bowl, Gaerse got to work.

Swadling struck in the third over, taking two in two balls, whilst Peter Cole took the remaining opener c&b in the next over.

The following 5 overs showed an incredible display of bowling as the Marston St Lawrence middle order struggled to make an impact on what was indeed a crumbly pitch.

Swadling did however strike, and Cole an over later. Khan and Edwards came on and started to take wickets, with Wakefield coming on to take the final wicket from his 4th delivery.

Cole and Haynes went in to chase down the low total, and couldn’t have gotten off to a better start as Jason creamed a six off the 3rd delivery. However, he got out playing the exact same shot the next ball.

Wakefield and Cole then set to work in rotating the strike, with Connor hitting a couple of fours whilst allowing the bowlers extras to continue to add up.

At the end of the 15th over Wakefields patience finally lifted as he shelled out to cover, bringing in Lee Paskin who had one objected - get a move on to get back for his wife’s birthday. He hit some great shots which somehow didn’t go for four on the gigantic outfield, but together with Cole he finished the game in 6-7 further overs.
