Richie Green – New GFR Amateur Manager

The Board of the Gala Fairydean Rovers FC Community Trust are delighted to announce the appointment of Richie Green as the club’s new Amateur team manager.

Richie returns to Netherdale after a trophy laden spell as a player for Gala Rovers.

Richie enjoyed a successful youth career as a goalkeeper in Edinburgh at Tynecastle Boys Club and Hutchison Vale before joining Gala Rovers, making his debut at the tender age of 16 years. During a hugely successful period in the Rovers history, Richie won a large haul of medals and silverware and was part of the “invincible” Rovers side of the 2000/01season who famously won 22 out of 22 league games in the Border Amateur A Division. Richie and his teammates from that time were inducted into the Gala Fairydean Rovers Hall of Fame in 2016.

He retired after playing for more than 20 years and moved into coaching when his sons Harry and Charlie started playing football. He was a coach at Galadean Juniors, the precursor to the current GFR Academy and had a spell as Goalkeeping Coach at the Gala Fairydean Rovers first-team under the managership of Neil Hastings. He took over the managerial reigns at Stow FC, guiding them to a play-off place during the 2024/25 season.

Community Trust Chair Graeme McIver said,

“We are delighted that Richie has accepted our offer to become manager of our Amateur side and the Board and myself are confident that Richie can build on the rich legacy left by the former management team of Welsh Curran and Lee Martin.”

“Richie was part of a special Gala Rovers side as a player and he knows the standards we expect and the style of football we encourage here at Netherdale. Richie has demonstrated a clear vision for the team, a strong understanding of Border amateur football, and a genuine enthusiasm for helping our players and club continue to grow.”

Chair of the GFR Academy David Sparham said,
“Our Border Amateur side remains an important part of our player pathway here at the Trust. It provides a route into adult football for players within our youth and junior system who we want to keep at Netherdale for as long as possible. We are confident that Richie can help build on the good work and success of the last few years.”

Richie Green said:

“I am honoured to be joining Gala Fairydean Rovers Amateurs and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to Netherdale in a management capacity. I enjoyed a successful career as a player here and I look forward to working with a talented young squad as we prepare for the challenges of next season. My
brother Barry has agreed to come onboard and I have been in a number of conversations with former teammates and other coaches I have worked with who are keen to help and assist me in the role and look forward to announcing the makeup of my coaching team soon.”
