Sunday Match Report ‼️
Sunday saw the FCC lads make the trip to Mexborough for our final fixture of May, returning to a ground which has generally been a happy hunting ground for Finningley in past fixture.
Skipper Tom once again found himself on the losing side of the toss and was invited to bat first on what looked an excellent wicket with a lightning-fast outfield.
After a brief team talk reminding everyone that the season needed kickstarting, Shaun Fell and George Eagle took to the middle. George started solidly, keeping the Mexborough openers quiet despite their quality, before being undone for 1(15). George was followed by new signing James Barker who continued to go after bowlers with an aggressive 18(17), including four classy boundaries.
When Scott Pearson departed afterwards, contributing 6(8), Finningley found themselves 45/3 and in need of a partnership.
Fortunately for FCC, Shaun Fell and Tom Irving had something brewing!
Shaun was his usual calm and composed self, accumulating runs all afternoon and rarely looking troubled on his way to an excellent 81. At the other end, Tom produced an innings that will live long in the memory, smashing a club record 154*(114), with an incredible 128 of those runs coming in boundaries. The pair completely took the game away from Mexborough, putting on a huge 216 run partnership and turning a shaky start into a dominant position.
Harry Bayliss and James Copley then added a rapid 14 from the final over, with Coppo finishing unbeaten on a blistering 14, as FCC closed on a formidable 288/4.
With plenty of runs on the board, Finningley took to the field full of confidence, although Mexborough started positively and showed exactly why they are a dangerous side on their own patch.
The breakthrough finally arrived courtesy of Scott Pearson, trapping the dangerous Jeffries LBW and lifting the entire team. Harry Bayliss then produced an excellent spell, removing Sharp, for a very well made 96(80), and Aston with George catching the latter behind the stumps.
The game then swung decisively in FCC’s favour thanks to James Copley. Drafted into the side at late notice, Coppo produced a superb spell of 4/17 from his 8 overs.
At the other end, left arm spinner Craig Rimmer made the most of the conditions, picking up 2 wickets with some clever spin bowling, while Matt Shaw kept things tidy against the lower order.
Archie Eastwood eventually wrapped things up, needing just three balls to remove the dangerous Cashmore, with Rimmer holding onto the catch to seal an excellent victory for Finningley.
A brilliant day all round for FCC, with standout performances from James Copley, Shaun Fell and, of course, Mr Cricket himself, Tom Irving.
MoM: Tom Irving for breaking the club’s record innings.
DoD: James Copley for bottling a 5’er and a hattrick.
