Garforth 1 – 1 FC Pontefract

⚽ Logan
🅰️ Josh

A morning away at Garforth on their huge 4G surface, usually something that suits our style of play perfectly.

However, with only 11 available, fitness quickly became a big factor and the lads were put to the test.

The teams were evenly matched, though we arguably created the better chances. Unfortunately, our finishing let us down and we went into half-time at 0–0, still searching for that clinical edge.

The second half followed a similar pattern until Garforth capitalised on a long kick from their goalkeeper. A tricky bounce caught us out, allowing their attacker to break through and lob our keeper for 1–0.

At times we relied too much on individual play and didn’t make the most of the space available, which made things harder for ourselves.

To the lads’ credit, they kept going and eventually found a breakthrough. A well-weighted through ball from Josh sent Logan racing clear. He showed great footwork to beat a couple of defenders before firing home confidently to level things at 1–1.

With a few players carrying knocks, we had to reshuffle positions, but the team kept battling.

With 17 minutes to go and the game finely balanced, we were handed a golden opportunity from the penalty spot. Unfortunately, the recent good run came to an end as the effort went wide, which summed up our morning in front of goal.

In the end, a draw was a fair result based on the overall performance.

We’ll get another chance to put things right when we host Garforth at Ferry Park later in the season.

FCP 1 – 2 Thornes

⚽ Maxi

Another rollercoaster of a game for the U14s today.

We started strongly and kept most of the play in their half early on. Within the first five minutes, Tommy J struck a powerful left-footed shot from nowhere. The keeper managed to save it, but Maxi reacted quickest and finished the rebound to put us 1–0 up.

We were the dominant team throughout the first half, hitting the post and creating a few more good chances. It easily could have been 3–0 by half-time, but we went into the break with just the one-goal lead.

We made a slight change going into the second half, bringing on our first sub. Unfortunately, it felt like a different team after the restart. The boys seemed to lose some of the drive and energy to compete.

For about ten minutes we struggled to get out of our own half, and the football wasn’t at the level we’ve seen from the team in recent weeks.
Then a silly tackle in the box gifted them an equaliser from the penalty spot, 1–1.
We then had to remove our centre-back from the game, which forced a few more changes during play.

With 10 minutes to go, we at least deserved a draw. But an error at the back allowed their main threat through on goal, and he finished well to give Thornes the lead 1–2.

We felt we should have been the team to end their unbeaten streak today, but unfortunately we gifted them the three points.

That said, it shows we’re a side capable of competing at the top end of this division.
A debut today as well for Luca. It may not have been his preferred position, and having only just met some of the team, he held himself well. I’m looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the team.

Woodkirk 3 – 8 FC Pontefract

⚽️ Josh x3
⚽️ Reuben x3
⚽️ Freddie
⚽️ Tommy J
🅰️ Josh
🅰️ Freddie
🅰️ Kenzee
🅰️ Maxi

The U14s travelled to Woodkirk this morning after a very tight game the last time the two teams met, so we weren’t quite sure what to expect.

With a new signing on the bench we had the luxury of a substitute today, taking a bit of pressure off the usual starting eleven.

We started the game strongly and within the first few minutes won a free kick from distance.

Josh stepped up and floated it perfectly over the keeper to make it 0–1.

We kept the pressure on and Reuben quickly added two more goals in quick succession to give us a 0–3 lead.

Sometimes starting that well can work against you, and the game shifted slightly.

A loss of shape and a couple of unusual errors allowed Woodkirk to pull two goals back before half-time, making it 2–3 at the break.

After a good team talk we reset and went again for the second half.

The second half was completely dominated by Pontefract.
We created chance after chance and scored some fantastic goals — a real shame we didn’t have the Veo running to watch them back.

Tommy J calmly slotted away another penalty.

Josh placed one neatly into the far corner with an assist from Kenzee on his debut.

Freddie struck a brilliant effort from outside the box that hit the underside of the crossbar and went in.

Reuben dribbled through the defence to score another excellent goal.

Maxi worked his way down the line and delivered a perfect cross for Josh to head over the keeper.

A great team performance and a solid 3–8 win, putting another three points on the board and setting us up nicely for next weeks fixture top of the league unbeaten Thornes.
