Camelon Juniors 3-3 Westfield Colts
Yesterday saw us take on our rivals Camelon in our final game of the season. With two players away on holiday and one sidelined through injury, the message before kick-off was simple: play the football we know we’re capable of, and the result will take care of itself.
The game started at a high tempo, with both teams going end-to-end. There were no clear-cut chances early on, but it was an exciting opening. However, between the 11th and 13th minutes, we found ourselves 2-0 down after a couple of lapses at the back.
The boys responded brilliantly and didn’t let their heads drop. Just a minute later, in the 14th minute, some good football saw Kyle beat his defender out wide before squaring the ball to No.16, who calmly found the back of the net to make it 2-1.
Four minutes later, we were level. Another excellent move ended with Callan threading a superb through ball to No.16, who finished confidently from just outside the box to make it 2-2.
The game continued to flow from end to end, but I felt we had the better control and created several good opportunities, although we couldn’t quite find the goal our play deserved.
On 57 minutes, a Camelon player unleashed a strike that crashed off the crossbar and dropped near the goal line. Cruz gathered the ball, but the referee judged it to have crossed the line, despite being around 35 yards from goal, and Camelon were awarded the goal.
Once again, the boys showed tremendous character in adversity. With five minutes remaining, we made some tactical changes to add extra pace, and the pressure began to build. We won three or four corners in the closing minutes, and with the final corner of the game, the ball broke loose inside the box. TJ slid in to keep it alive and found debutant Ali just inside the 18-yard box. Ali struck it first time and rifled it into the roof of the net to complete a deserved comeback.
A fantastic way to end the season and a performance that summed up the character of this group.
