Following the official closing ceremony and final dinner, the Team England Fly Fishing squad had the opportunity to relax and reflect on a fantastic championship alongside fellow competitors from across Europe. The evening provided a fitting conclusion to a week of competitive fishing, shared experiences and new friendships forged through the sport.
Before beginning our journey home, the team enjoyed some well-earned free time exploring the beautiful historic city of Mostar. The city’s picturesque Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its blend of Ottoman, Mediterranean and Balkan influences. Its cobbled streets are lined with traditional stone buildings, artisan shops and cafés, offering a glimpse into centuries of rich cultural history.
The centrepiece of Mostar is undoubtedly the iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge). Originally built in 1566 during the Ottoman Empire by architect Mimar Hayruddin, the elegant single-span stone bridge stood for more than 400 years as a symbol of connection between communities on either side of the Neretva River. Tragically destroyed during the Bosnian War in 1993, the bridge was painstakingly reconstructed using traditional techniques and reopened in 2004. Today it stands once again as a powerful symbol of reconciliation, resilience and unity, attracting visitors from around the world.
With memories made both on and off the water, the team then travelled by minibus from Mostar back to Sarajevo for the journey home. Despite a delayed late-night flight, spirits remained high as everyone reflected on an unforgettable championship experience representing England on the international stage.
Team England would like to thank the organisers, volunteers, officials, sponsors, supporters and everyone who has followed our progress throughout the event. Your encouragement means a great deal, and we look forward to building on this experience as preparations begin for future international competitions.
Safe travels to all the competing nations, and until next time—tight lines! 🏴🎣
