Perfect weather window for a paddle from Berwick to Eyemouth today in our double sea kayak with Daisy dog on top. 9 nautical miles . Special treat to go through The Needle on the spring high tide. Great to see the guillemots , razor bills, puffins and fulmars back for the nesting season. Still waiting on the kittiwakes to arrive.

Great article on the dangers of cold water paddling.
Our waters in Scotland are pretty cold most of the year. Loch Ness , due to its depth never gets much above 5 degrees below the surface all year round.
Paddlers all have habits ,good and bad , picked up over the years.
My habit is to always splash some water on my forehead every time I start paddling. Just to let my brain know how cold the water is.
When I started paddling , 1982, I capsized after a river trip down The River Balvaig. I was told it was the easiest way to get out of the river. I thought I would be fine as I took a deep breath giving me plenty time to exit my boat for the first time. As soon as I hit the water it felt like I had been punched in the stomach and I instantly exhaled all the air in my lungs under the water. Panic set in and not happy to say the least. I survived but a hard lesson. Took me a couple of years before I got in kayak again.
Doesn’t matter how fit you are. I paddled with an international gymnast a few years ago. He was doing handstands on his boat. Really impressive. He fell in and reacted badly to the cold water. He had no fat , pure muscle. Took him a while to recover from his cold swim. I was a warm sunny mid summers day.
Stay safe out there everyone on your paddling adventures. Wear a B/A and always dress for water temp.
Rivers are going to be exciting and cold after the snow melt.

Whiteadder 5ft in flood at Wullie’s Hole.
Feel so lucky to be out paddling my local river. Only 15mins drive away.
This is where Romney’s link was found from tetrapod fossils.
A few years ago archaeologists blocked off three quarters of the the river and dug a huge hole about 20ft deep in the river bed. Interesting online read.
Well it sure had a big impact on the river too where a huge whirlpool appears river right , below the ledge and above the hole.Strongest at 3ft which did take me completely by surprise when I first experience it resulting in a memorable combat roll.
😱😱😱. Always expect the unexpected.

Fun trip down The Whiteadder today in my Scorch. Air 7 degrees and water icy cold and rising due to snow melt. A great level to practise skills and play. Just like a huge silver salmon that nearly jumped onto my kayak.
First ice cream head of the year when I rolled , just for fun.
If you don’t use it you lose it 😱

First time white water kayaking since I broke my ankle last January. I have been looking forward to this day for a long time.
Couldn’t resist hubby’s invitation to join him on the River Whiteadder today. At 5ft and rising we had a fast and bouncy run down river on what I usually call my baby run. Not a baby today😱😱😱.

A wee film of me paddling down The Spey from the SCA put in opposite Cragganmore to Aberlour.
It was a work trip for my husband taking a young vulnerable teenager on an adventure. Trying to show him a different way of life camping out overnight and canoeing.
Daisy and I tagged along for fun.
Fun time had by Daisy for sure, paddling down the rapids and hitting all the eddies.
I think as her 8th owner Daisy is sure having the time of her life.
