Wow, what an achievement by our Vogalonga crews yesterday. 🇮🇹🚣‍♂️

While the official Vogalonga route through Venice is around 30km, our crews also had a further 14km to row due to where the gigs were craned in and out.

All of this in temperatures reaching 29 degrees, and with significant chop developing at times once the motorboats and ferries resumed.

Well done Stuart and Ashley, who coxed superbly through some extremely busy and confined waterways at times…..and to the rowers also for fending off boats as and when necessary.

Fantastic scenery, fantastic atmosphere and an incredible physical achievement by everyone involved.

We are hugely proud of both crews. 🌊🥵🚣‍♀️😎

It’s the day before our two crews take part in The Vogalonga. They have all arrived in Venice with Ashley and Sharon travelling overland across Europe through stunning scenery towing the two gigs on the newly fabricated (by Ashley) two-tier trailer. Everyone else flying in….with Julie and Cheryl arriving in good time to see many of the sights of Naples, Sorento, Capri and Pompei too……and even Pope Leo XIV! ⛪️ 🙏🌞🍕 🍇

The Vogalonga is an annual non-competitive rowing event and water parade in Venice, spanning approximately 30 kilometers. Born in 1974 as a peaceful protest against the damage caused by motorboat wakes to the city's delicate lagoon, it brings together thousands of human-powered vessels from all around the world 🌍 🚣‍♀️

Best of luck to our crews tomorrow. Here’s some of the sights so far….

Sunny bank holiday rowing conditions ahead. ☀️🚣‍♂️

The club is looking forward to a weekend of rowing in what promises to be some glorious sunshine, exactly the sort of conditions which remind rowers why they love being out on the water.

But a reminder to everyone heading out this weekend: sunscreen is essential.

Out on the water, UV exposure can be stronger because sunlight reflects off the surface, while any breeze can stop you realising just how much sun you’re getting. The wind and saltwater can dry skin, making damage easier.

So, it’s definitely a slap on the factor 50 kind of weekend. 🧴🌞

Hydrate, stay safe and enjoy the rowing 🚣 🌞

And if you’ve ever thought about giving gig rowing a go, there are far worse ways to spend a sunny day or evening than this… 🌊

One of the most incredible things about racing in the Isles of Scilly isn’t just the competition, it’s the history floating alongside you. 🚣‍♀️😎

Among the hundreds of modern gigs are a handful of legendary “heritage gigs” still racing today, dating between 1830 and 1879.

Names like Golden Eagle, Czar, Slippen, Shah, and Bonnet are spoken about with huge respect in the gig rowing world.

These boats are far more than racing gigs, they are part of Cornwall and Scilly’s maritime history.

Long before gig rowing became a sport, gigs were working boats used for pilotage, rescues, salvage and, according to local folklore, even smuggling.

Another historic gig is Treffry, built in 1838 and still racing today. Modern Cornish pilot gigs are still built to Treffry’s measurements, meaning every new gig launched carries a direct connection to a boat nearly 190 years old.

To row alongside these historic gigs at the World Championships is a reminder that gig rowing carries a remarkable connection to the past.

In Scilly, the past is not sitting in a museum, it is still racing across the water. 🚣‍♀️🚣‍♀️🚣‍♀️🌊 🌞
