Choice is one of the greatest gifts we can give our horses.
The choice of when to move, where to stand, who to spend time with, when to rest and where to sleep.
Today, the herd has chosen to escape the heat. Tyson and Harry came for a hose down whilst I was topping up their waters, Thimble has taken herself off into the woods, while Roxy and Blondie are enjoying the shade of the shelter. No one told them where they should be. No one moved them there. They made those decisions themselves.
Horses are incredibly capable of regulating their own comfort when given the opportunity. They know when they're hot, when they want shade, when they want company and when they want space.
Providing an environment that allows horses to make these choices for themselves is a huge part of supporting their physical and mental wellbeing. βοΈπ³π΄
