🚨Match Report: League Cup Group Stage - Home to Loanhead MYFC🚨

Our final match of the season saw us entertain familiar opposition Loanhead MYFC at Inch Park where teams were playing for pride more than anything having bowed out of the cup last week after defeat to Currie FC. South were looking to finish with a win and finish a passable 3rd in their respective group of 6.

The game didn’t exactly ooze with quality and at times, respectfully had the energy of a friendly game. The bumpy surface didn’t help matters. The home side had a handful of opportunities to open the scoring that were squandered - most memorably from corners where there were a number of delightful balls put in to great areas. Ironically, it was a Loanhead set piece that we failed to defend properly, and the opening goal came all too easily for the visitors.

Reezo put us back on level terms after half an hour with a neat finish from 18 yards in off the post.

HT 1-1

Loanhead regained the lead not long after the interval and South were from their best. The introduction of Ashton and Noah for the final 25 - both out recently with injuries - injected a bit of life into the squad. It was a great reverse ball from the prior that unlocked the Loanhead defence and Declan finished coolly into the bottom corner.

The pressure was now mounting for Miners, with Roma having most of the ball and plenty territory. Some strong defending and good saves from Loanhead’s stand-in goalie kept the game level. The home side were awarded a penalty on the hour mark which Harris converted terrifically into the bottom left corner.

South still had work to do in the final 10 as Loanhead went in search for a way back into the game. We didn’t do ourselves any favours with some of the clearances and lack of composure on the ball. Max made a couple of smart stops and caught cleanly 2 free kicks late on to save our blushes and take away the 3 points.

FT 3-2 South

Far from our best and a display that left a lot to be desired, but nice to end the season with a win. We were borderline for a squad today so credit it to the lads who grinded out the result 👍

Parents’ MOTM: Olly Neacy - a long overdue first MOTM award. His press and work rate off the ball had the opposition defenders constantly on their toes, and his running power on the ball always threatened. Ashton notably made a big impact when he came on as well 👏⚽️

🚨Match Report: League Cup Group Stage - Home to Edina Hibs🚨

In what will likely be our penultimate match of the season barring some sort of miracle, we welcomed Edina to Holyrood in the glorious sunshine this morning. South were hoping to replicate the strong performance and 4-0 victory in the reverse fixture less than a month ago.

The home side started flat, and Edina looked the more threatening going forward. Our stand-in goalkeeper made some smart stops to keep the visitors at bay in the opening 25 minutes. It was though big Harris - against the run of play - that opened the scoring when he was released by Alasdair and rounded the keeper pass into the empty net.

HT 1-0 South

We knew we had been far from our best, and it was paramount we raised our performance levels in the 2nd half to support the cause of another 3 points.

2 minutes after the break, Harris H’s darting run from defensive to attacking third gave us an unexpected overload in the penalty area. The ball eventually fell to Riley Mo who flicked the ball over his shoulder with his back to goal and gave the men in black a 2 goal cushion.

With 25 minutes to play, the cat was put amongst the pigeons when a contentious moment in the match resulted in South going down to 10. A quick rejig in system was required to see us through the next phase of the game, with momentum now swinging back to the away side.

South remained resolute and ironically played their best stuff of the game in the final 20 despite having a man less than the opposition. Roma managed the game well and made subs regularly to get fresh legs on the pitch (and to run down the clock 😅), but any seed of doubt was put to bed when Olly made it 3 with 5 minutes to play to keep up his impressive goals to games ratio in the latter stages of the season 💪

FT 3-0 South

Parents’ MOTM: Alasdair MacLeod - our midfield maestro making things happen for us today and a great assist in the opening goal. Given more defensive duties in the 2nd half and in turn, contributed hugely to our clean sheet. Well done pal 👏❤️⚽️ Oliver and Olly in contention too 👍😎

🚨Match Report: League Cup Group Stages - Away tie vs Currie FC🚨

Roma were back in midweek action at Lanark Road against Currie FC.
We found ourselves in a really physical game against a strong Currie side who won the previous fixture (4-3) at Double Hedges.

Roma managed to start the game quite well and our striker Harris Welding looked up for the battle, pressurising the Currie back line with some persistent attacking play. We missed some big opportunities early in the game and ultimately got knocked by a sucker punch with their first goal in the 11th minute. It didn’t take long for Currie to score their 2nd either as it happened only a minute later. Roma never really recovered after that goal and we played with very little belief that we could go and get back into the game.

HT 2-0.

2nd half was pretty much the same as the 1st. Currie scoring 10 minutes in then adding another on the 55th minute. A lacklustre performance but credit where it’s due as we struggled to contain Currie’s attacks at times.

The boys will need to take the positives out of the game as we still managed to create chances up top. On another day if they chances go in then it’s a different game altogether. We will however, need to be stronger, resilient and more commanding defensively if we aim to improve against better opposition at this level. Defensive transitions seem to be our Achilles heel at the moment so there’s lots to work on.

FT 4-0.

Parent’s MOTM - Max Lizier.
A disappointing evening but a big positive was Max’s performance in between the sticks. Max had some incredible saves throughout and done really well with his distribution and sweeping up behind his defenders. Well done pal! 👏🏻⚽️🇦🇹

🚨Match Report: League Cup Group Stages - Away to Loanhead MYFC🚨

Despite on paper being favourites going into this cup clash, we needed reminded how important it was for us not to let that get to our heads, and that a strong performance would still be desired against the familiar opposition of Loanhead Miners.

The hosts were stubborn for the best part of the first half, and South’s backline were threatened by the long ball and Miners’ pace up top. Big Harris was on hand and quick of his line to bail us out a couple of times, as did the crossbar. Roma weren’t short of chances either with the Loanhead no.1 making a handful of saves in the opening half hour, albeit, comfortable ones.

It was though the men in red that opened the scoring on the cusp of half time. A great change of speed and direction by Noah to give him time to put the ball on a plate for Decs who waited patiently at the back post to prod home the opener.

HT 1-0 South

A stuffy and flat first half was of our opinion, and we knew we could play a lot better. The message was reiterated at the interval, and the away side stepped it up a notch in the 2nd 35.

In very similar fashion to his goal on Sunday, Noah got his body in the right place at the right time deep into the penalty area, pickpocketed the ball from the centre half and hit it home to the double advantage - getting himself on the scoresheet for the 3rd time in 4 games!

The visitors were great to watch in the 2nd half with lots of good passing football on show for the bumper Wednesday night crowd. An ameliorated display soon brought a 3rd goal for South, again from Noah’s cross but this time Olly on the receiving end to nod in from close range.

Notwithstanding having less subs than we normally do, we were able to rotate fresh legs at regular intervals later on in the match as we pushed for a 4th. The link up play between midfield and final third continued to flourish into the latter stages of the game, and Olly’s brace would make it a 4th for the visitors - a beauty of first-time strike which flew past the keeper at his near post.

FT 4-0 South

We had to be patient, but we grew into the game and the chances came. Loanhead on another day could’ve had a couple earlier on, but South’s confidence increased significantly after opening the scoring and Loanhead couldn’t cope with us in the 2nd half.

Parents’ MOTM: Noah Elam - there were again some really strong performances across the team. Our front 3 impressed the coaches and all got on the scoresheet, Brodie and James picking up votes too with their defensive performance, but Noah was our most impactful player in terms of goal contributions: 1 goal and 2 assists. He also worked tirelessly off the ball, and made it a really tough game for his opposition full back. Great to see him with some restored confidence and his effort and attitude now converting into creating goal scoring opportunities. Proud of the resilience you’ve shown Noah, well done pal 💪❤️⚽️

🚨Match Report: League Cup Group Stage - Home to Currie FC🚨

After back to back wins for just the 2nd time this calendar year, South looked forward to a long awaited return match with Currie FC. When the teams last met, South were put to the sword 10-0 in May of 2025. The hosts were keen to see how they matched up a year on from their last tussle.

The opening exchanges were competitive with both teams looking to assert themselves on the game. The away side opened the scoring with a deflected effort that spun and looped over everyone to creep in at the back post. But justly, the game was back on level terms quickly after when Noah’s high press allowed him to nip the ball away from defender and goalkeeper to tap in at the back stick.

The equaliser gave South a platform to start controlling the game for large parts of the 1st half. Some great football played from midfield into attack, with defenders choosing the right times to play through, over or round. Our play deservedly put us in front when Declan slipped in Harris just before he was taken out, and a good advantage from the referee allowed Harris to neatly pass the ball into the net with his left foot of all things 👀

HT 2-1 South

The boys in red continued with the same great attitude and work rate after the interval, but it was an individual error at the back that proved costly for us and against the run of play, the game was back on level terms.

The home side didn’t seem flustered by being pegged back and were motivated to go and find a 3rd goal. 20 minutes from time, Ollie played a ball through for Harris and the visiting keeper got caught in no man’s land. A delightful flick over the Currie no.1 from the big striker put us back in the driving seat for the final stages of the game.

All but with a little less than 10 minutes to play, South were on course for a very handy 3 points in the race to progress to the next round. But we all know the game of football can turn on a sixpence, and like so, the visitors had two chances where we failed to deal with the loose balls, and in the end, that was our downfall. 1 ahead to 1 behind in the blink of an eye, and that was all she wrote.

4-3 Currie FC

A gut punch of a result in a game we put so much into. Never nice being on the receiving end of a smash and grab. Despite the positive performance across 90% of the game, the result itself makes it difficult to qualify from our group now and we now rely on other teams below us helping us out as well as winning all our remaining games 👀🤞nonetheless, another indicator of how far Roma have came this season.

Parents’ MOTM: James Harris - a clear winner and standout performance at left back. James left it all on the pitch, smashing into challenges, playing passes with intent down the left channel, getting up and supporting attacks, and ultimately, playing his position really well. For us, his best performance of the season 🙌 well done pal 💪❤️⚽️

🚨April’s Player of the Month: Cooper Adamson 🚨

Delighted to award Cooper Adamson the accolade of Roma’s Player of the Month for April.

Most months, Mikey and JP have a debate between 2 or 3 players who have stood out across training and matches within the month - most notably for their attitude, application and progress/improvement they’ve made. Admittedly, this month, there was no debate.

The month started off with 3 difficult games against teams at the top of Div 2A. Whilst these games posed challenging for the team, Cooper more than matched his opposition wingers, regularly winning his individual battles. It was at times backs against the wall for the team, and Cooper was always standing up to be counted, picking up 2 MOTM awards from the 3 trickier games on paper.

The 2nd half of the month was more positive results wise, and Cooper’s strong performances continued, again demonstrating his versatility to play on either side of the back 4. A hungrier and more determined Coops is now starting to go and make things happen in the game. The cherry on top of the cake was netting his first goal of the season when he rifled the ball into the roof of the net down in Chirnside last week.

Keep up the great work pal! Have loved watching you play this month 💪❤️⚽️

🚨 Match Report: League Cup Group Stages – Home Tie vs Edina Hibs 🚨

Roma were back in midweek action at Double Hedges against Edina Hibs. All previous fixtures between the sides have been tight affairs, so we were expecting another tough game.

South started on the front foot from the off, shooting downhill in the first half. Our lively front three of Ashton, Olly and Riley never gave Edina a moment’s peace, and the latter opened his account for the evening with a left-foot strike in the 9th minute. South seemed up for the battle and won the majority of first and second balls throughout the half. Some lovely, connected passages of play were put together, resulting in a few more opportunities, while the South defence managed to limit Edina to just a few counter-attacks. We had to wait until the half-hour mark for goal number two — Olly with a clinical top-bin finish.

HT 2–0

Into the second half, Edina managed to put us under a bit more pressure as we faced uphill. South continued to press for the next goal and gave themselves more breathing space with another right-foot strike from Riley on 50 minutes. The same man would finalise Roma’s scoring for the evening, with some lovely link-up play giving Noah the space to provide a great cross for Riley to rise above the Edina defence and dispatch a header into the net. A really strong team performance from the boys!

FT 4–0

Parents’ MOTM – Riley Morrison. A constant thorn in the Edina defence all evening, capped off with the perfect hat-trick! Well done Riley — superb stuff 💪🏻⚽️

🚨Match Report: League Cup Group Stages - Away to Chirnside Utd🚨

A third and final trip South to sunny Chirnside for our next fixture in the group stage section of the league cup. The capital side were determined to bounce back after a disappointing showing in last week’s affair with Lochend.

Some individual errors that proved costly early doors, but when South got going, there was no stopping us. An emphatic display with plenty goals and great football. 3 points on the board as we look to climb the table quickly in our group section. Credit to Chirnside who never let their heads drop across the piece 👏

Shout outs to Noah and Cooper who both opened their accounts for the season, and James too with a really strong defensive performance at left back. Our Parents’ MOTM award though goes to hatrick hero Declan Bryce who came to life in the attacking phase banging in 3 goals in quick succession whilst also dictating a lot of the play through midfield. A long overdue first MOTM of the season. Well done pal 💪❤️

🚨Match Report: Div 2 League Cup Group Stages - Away to Lochend FA Colts🚨

Failed to match Lochend in any department. Put to the sword by a hungrier team. Hard to believe only a week go we were arguably the better side in the home leg. Life comes at you fast in grassroots football 😅

Parents’ MOTM: Cooper Adamson - showed the required heart and desire in winning his individual battles. We’ve had 3 challenging games on the bounce against strong opposition, and Coops has been solid in all 3. Attitude and application there for all to see, whether he’s winning or losing. Well done pal 💪❤️⚽️ Great to see Olly get his first goal for South as well 👏
