STORY TIME - My background and why I want to help others.
My passion for helping others improve their lives stems from a pivotal experience in my childhood. I watched my mum relearn how to walk after neurosurgery, and it left a lasting impression on me. That moment sparked my fascination with movement and my desire to support others in overcoming challenges. At school, I dreamed of becoming a physiotherapist, but I realised I wasn’t going to get the grades. Nursing felt like the next best thing—it combined my interest in health and my drive to make a difference. I went to complete my nursing degree and have almost 10 years of qualified experience.
Working as a nurse has been incredibly eye-opening. I’ve had the privilege of witnessing, up close, the many health challenges people face. It’s given me unique insight into how habits, lifestyles, and circumstances—whether abundance or poverty—shape people’s health and lives.
During my time as a student nurse, I injured my back, which I think stemmed from poor movement patterns and the physical demands of nursing, especially as someone tall. Over the years, I tried countless ways to get rid of the recurring pain and tension. Nothing seemed to truly work—until I discovered Functional Patterns.
I first came across Functional Patterns through a skater I followed online. Their fluid movement, both on and off the board, caught my attention, as did the unique resistance-based exercises they were doing. Intrigued, and tired of not feeling like the athlete I once was, I decided to invest in the 10-week online course. It opened my eyes to a whole new way of understanding the body. Wanting to delve deeper, I went on to complete the Human Foundations course.
Since then, I’ve worked extensively on my own body, and the benefits have been life-changing. I’ve not only found relief from pain but also reconnected with the athleticism I thought I’d lost. Now, I want to help others experience the same transformation.
I truly believe that life doesn’t need to be defined by pain or constant struggle. So often, the root of these challenges is discomfort stored in the body. Functional Patterns provides a way of seeing the body as a complex mechanical system—one that can always be tuned and improved. My goal is to guide others on this journey, helping them move better, feel better, and ultimately live better.
