I’ve had a few clients recently ask about alcohol intake, and with this lovely weather (hello Prosecco & beers 🍹☀️), I thought this would be helpful.
It also made me think… could knowing this information (for some) possibly change habits? 🤷🏻♀️
First off — no judgement whatsoever. I enjoy a drink too. But understanding what’s going on in your body can help you make more informed choices.
👉 When you drink alcohol, your body treats it as a priority
It can’t be stored, so your body works to break it down first — meaning fat burning (and even carb burning) takes a back seat.
👉 Fat burning slows down
While alcohol is being processed, your body temporarily pauses fat oxidation. So any food eaten alongside or after drinking is more likely to be stored rather than used for energy.
👉 The impact lasts longer than you think
Even after the drinks are finished, your body can remain in a reduced fat-burning state for up to 24–36 hours depending on how much you’ve had. So it’s not just about the night itself — it can influence progress into the next day (or two).
👉 Increased fat storage
Alcohol itself isn’t easily stored as fat, but because it halts fat burning and often lowers inhibitions (hello late-night snacks), it can indirectly lead to increased calorie intake and fat storage over time.
✨ So what are some smarter choices?
• Opt for lower calorie options like spirits with diet mixers (e.g. vodka + soda, gin + slimline tonic)
• Dry wines or Prosecco tend to be lower in sugar than sweeter cocktails
• Be mindful of high-calorie mixers (fruit juices, syrups, creamy drinks)
• Alternate alcoholic drinks with water
⏱ 20-minute rule
Try giving yourself 20 minutes between drinks — use that time to have some water 💧
This helps slow things down, keeps you hydrated, & helps you tune into how you’re feeling. Most people naturally end up drinking less without feeling restricted.
At the end of the day, it’s about balance. You don’t need to cut alcohol out to see progress— just understand it & maybe make some more informed choices.
Enjoy the sunshine & make choices that align with your goals 💛 ☀️
