We caught up with the Gaffer after game

“I’m disappointed, mainly for the girls, because I genuinely thought we deserved something from the game.

I’ve seen first-hand how much work they’ve put in all through pre-season, how much they’ve bought into what we’re trying to do, and I don’t think we got the reward for that today.

But that’s football. We’ll take what we need to take from it, stick together and move on. I’ve got a lot of belief in this group.

That game’s gone now. We’ve got the FA Cup against SJR on Sunday, so the focus switches straight to that. We pick ourselves up, have a good week and go again together.”

The development squad travelled to Barnsley today for their second game of the season. After a strong performance last week, we were eager to show what we could do.

During the first half, the ladies showed great will and enthusiasm which helped us progress up the field and create opportunities. Unfortunately, during the first half no chance was put to rest. Barnsley managed to slot one away just before half time.

The town ladies didn’t stop there. The second half, we came out fighting for the win. With fast movements and extended pressure, our number 10 Katie Paling, who is sponsored by Sheffield Student Homes, managed to create an open chance from a wonderfully taken corner. Leanne Temperton, who is sponsored by Stepping Stones Financial Planning LLP, headed in a rocket which got us our first goal and making the game level. This was the boost we needed! Not long after Katie Paling was on the attack again, slotting another corner into our youngest player on the squad, Olivia Brady, who is available to sponsor, tucked away our second goal. Just before the full time whistle, a mistake from the Barnsley keeper left Rayanne Haywood, who is sponsored by Ray inks and Watoto Pre-School, unmarked and in possession. Cool, calm and collected, she got us our final goal, ending the game with a 3-1 victory.

We thank our sponsors Drummond Street Artist and Manor House as well as all individual player sponsors for supporting us!

FULL TIME | DRONFIELD TOWN WOMEN 2–3 STAVELEY MINERS WELFARE WOMEN

A frustrating result at Stonelow as Dronfield Town Women were narrowly beaten 3–2 by Staveley Miners Welfare Women in our opening league fixture.

Dronfield started brightly and competed well from the first whistle, looking to play on the front foot and attack in the right areas.

Staveley took the lead from a set piece, but the response from Dronfield was excellent. Heads didn’t drop, the players continued to battle and were rewarded with an equaliser to send the sides into half-time level at 1–1.

The second half remained a competitive and hard-fought contest, with both sides having spells in the game. Dronfield continued to push forward and create opportunities, but Staveley were able to find the decisive moments and eventually edged the contest 3–2.

Plenty to take from the performance despite the result. The work rate, togetherness and willingness to keep fighting were there throughout, and we’ll take those positives into the next one.

Regan produced a superb performance, battling throughout and showing exactly the attitude and commitment we want from the group.

Not the result we wanted, but plenty to build on. We go again
