💙 Blues Match Summary 💙
I think it was Dorothy who said “there’s no place like home” when she realised she wasn’t in Kansas anymore. Drig Blues must’ve been thinking the same thing after their capitulation away at Clifford last week.
As it turns out, Dorothy was right…and did Drig show it in the village this afternoon!
From the get go, they were on it, the negatives from last week being passed into history. Drig looked like a completely different team, passing, moving, flowing…Drig were making the long grass on the pitch seem like a Wembley carpet.
Intent & good possession is one thing, but Drig turned it into a cutting edge early on, Clark cleverly flicking on to find Charlie, who made no mistake from just inside the box. 1-0, and it seemed the boys were enjoying themselves, which is always a joy to watch.
The whole team were stepping up, from Benny battling in midfield, spraying balls out wide, to Billy being a constant threat, Clark being involved in everything & Charlie causing havoc on the right. The unit was working.
AJ was proving to be his usual reliable self, throwing his body in front of everything & being the vocal point at the back!
Credit to Wortley, they worked their way into the game & it became a much more even affair as the first half drew to a close, but some of the football Drig were playing was delightful: over lapping, underlapping, keeping possession…it turns out they do listen at training!
Josh was excellent, running the game from centre half & Bobby was making a real nuisance of himself up top.
Although the game was pretty even, the equaliser came from nothing, a long punt forward from a kick in, misjudged at the back & somehow it squirmed its way in. Proving again that nothing can be taken for granted in this game.
Half time, 1-1
The management team, with an eye on the timing of the equaliser, started the mind games, leaving Wortley on the field waiting for Drig for a full 2 minutes at the start of the second half.
It seemed to work as Drig started the second half as they had the first. Chase was the first to threaten with a trademark jinking run & shot before Bobby was taken out on the edge of the box to win a free kick. Jack crashed in the free kick, which was well saved, but Bobby was there to pounce on the rebound to drill it home, sweet revenge!
Clark followed it up with a quick fire stunner, a lovely run followed by an even better finish. 3-1, the Blues were purring.
Clark wasn’t finished there though, and followed it up with the goal of the game: a beautiful ball in from Jack, taken on the turn & volley by Clark. What a goal. Think David Platt vs Belgium at Italia 90 & you’re in the right ball park!
Drig were genuinely good to watch & Jack was starring, taking control of every situation he was involved in.
Maybe Drig were too comfortable, a mix up at the back made it 4-2, Drig needed to focus to get the result over the line…Archie was required a couple of times in the closing stages.
As the clock ticked away, Drig were still playing some great stuff, the Drigites were lapping it. The only thing missing was a goal for Billy, who really caught hold of approximately 25 shots without success! His performance deserved a goal.
The final whistle signalled celebrations in the home end and on the field. The management team were delighted. The Drigites were ecstatic & headed for some well deserved refreshment at the club!
I’ve said this before & I’ll say it again: this is the kind of performance that this team is capable of. Consistency is the next challenge. But tonight, we enjoy the feeling, we raise a glass and look forward to training in the week…to ensure we feel this way every weekend…let’s build on this.
