1.

Shimna Wheeler’s Cycling Club provides a structure and focal point for all those wanting to enjoy recreational cycling, (with a friendly competitive edge) in the Newcastle and Castlewellan areas. We are a friendly inclusive club were all cyclists are welcome regardless of age, gender or ability. There are numerous club runs throughout the week which cater for cyclists of all abilities and fitness

levels. During the Autumn / Winter season various members are involved in mountain biking events and training. New comers are encouraged and made feel welcome. We also participate in leisure and charity cycle events throughout the year. Members have raised substantial amounts of money for various worthwhile causes such as the Down Residential Project, Marie Curie, Shimna Valley, The Sunflower Charity, Co – operation North and Bóthar. To encourage that “friendly competitive edge” our popular time trial league runs from April to September. These races are held on Thursday or Friday evenings at 6.30pm on various local roads. Distances vary from 7 to 15 miles. Many club members along with cyclists from local clubs such as La Lanterne Rouge CC, Dromara CC, Phoenix CC, Banbridge CC, Team Vision Racing, Newcastle AC and Mourne Runners compete in this popular and competitive series! Last but not least there is also a social aspect to the club; whether it is stopping for a coffee and scone during a club run, getting involved in the craic and banter, heading off to Mallorca with bike minded individuals or attending one of our “beer an pizza” nights! Use of Club page or Facebook Members Group. Users should be reminded that this is a club page/group and will reflect on the public perception of Shimna Wheelers. Shimna Wheelers Latte member Sean Kane has recently returned from an extraordinary journey through Patagonia—covering a staggering 12,000 km over the course of a couple of months.

Battling relentless winds, remote roads, and some of the most rugged landscapes on the planet, this was more than just a ride—it was a true test of endurance, resilience, and spirit. From vast open plains to dramatic mountain backdrops, Sean experienced it all, one pedal stroke at a time.

If you’re looking for inspiration (or a reminder of just how far a bike can take you), his story is well worth a read.

Shimna Wheelers have been out every weekend during the winter, on road bikes and on mountain bikes in the forest parks. Last weekend was particularly busy as the event season is upon us again: the 0930 crew had their annual Lighthouse to Lighthouse (Cranfield to St Johns Point) spin while several of the 0830 guys were on Fermanagh's Lakelander Gravel Grinder. With both events offering distances of around 70 miles the legs were well tested - good preparation for forthcoming the incoming seasons sportives and trips.

Today the Shimna Wheelers joined with family members to mark the 25th anniversary of club founder and stalwart, Paul McKibbin. The 30 mile cycle ride took place in perfect weather, along a route via Aughlisnafin and Brennans of Seaforde, where we enjoyed excellent hospitality. It was a memorable morning of reminiscence, family and club tradition; and the next generation of SWCC members made a guest appearance at the start!

Killinchy Sportive

An early morning start saw 5 members of the Latte group ride over to Killinchy to ride the Killinchy CC charity sportive.

We arrived in Killinchy just after 8am and after a coffee and loo break set of early on the sportive route. I figured if we made it to the food stop in Killough before the ‘fast lads’ we’d be doing well! Anyway they pulled in a few minutes after us 😉

We left first and surprisingly only 10 guys passed us just before Strangford. As we made steady progress a further 2 groups of approx 30 in total overtook us as we stopped for a comfort break just before the hill in Raholp. We made good progress on the rest of the sportive and arrived back in Killinchy just before 1pm having ridden 88 miles in total. First person we saw was Marcus scoffing a burger. So we headed straight for the burger queue after actually riding the sportive!!

After a short break we headed off for home into a lovely headwind. The final 24 miles were tough going but we made it back to Newcastle in one piece after 110 hard miles.
