Match Report - Bessacarr Doncaster A v Cudworth Phoenix Home

Bessacarr Doncaster C travelled away to Minsthorpe A for their second match in 2 days as they took on a tough Minsthorpe side and a match that was a very close encounter

Minsthorpe took the first game in 2 sets only for the Bessacarr pair of Nathan and Wendy to even it up in a close 3 ender. Nathan and Aendy won the first end 21-12 before Minstghorpe evened it up by winning the second end 21-17. Nathan and Wendy kept control and won out 21-15.
Game 3 also went the way of Besscarr with the all ladies pair of Debs and Viv winning in 2 ends 21-19 21-15.

Both teams traded wins over the next 5 games with both Bessacarr and Minsthorpe winning games in 2 ends;

The match was so finely poised with the match currently sat at 4-4. Bessacarr pair Tim and Brian started well winning comfortably 21-10 in the first end, but Minsthorpe fought back winning the second end 21-16. The 3rd end was always going to be close but unfortunately Bessacarr pair Tim and Brian just fell short losing out 21-19

A really good game and a really close loss. Unlucky Team a great effort

Match Report - Bessacarr Doncaster A v Cudworth Phoenix Home

Bessacarr Doncaster A faced a Cudworth Phoenix side in a rearranged fixture and were looking for good win on a night that they shared the hall with the Bessacarr C team.

Bessacarr won the first 7 games as they totally took charge of the match winning the first 5 game comfortably in 2 straight sets and it took till game 6 before Cudworth made a challenge before Bessacarr pair Glenn and Josh S winning 21-17 and a tight second end 22-20. Game 7 also went the way of Bessacarr in 2 sets before Game 8 was the first and only loss of the night. The game was tight with Bessacarr losing the first end 17-21 before recovering to win the second 21-17. The 3rd end could have gone eitherway but Cudworth Phoenix eventually picked up their point 21-18

The final game of the match was also won in 2 ends and finished off a great team winn

Well done team, a really good win!!!

Match Report - Bessacarr Doncaster C v Ossett C Home

The Bessacarr Doncaster Club C faced the first of 2 matches in 2 days.

The First match they hosted a reduced Ossett C side that only travelled with 2 pairs.

The last time these teams met it was a close run match with several games being battled out - this match was no exception

With 3 games in the bag, Bessacarr had to concentrate on winning a couple of further games to finish off the match and grab the extra points. They started well winning the first game in 2 sets. Game 2 unfortunately went to Ossett in a great 3 ender battle with Bessy ladies Debs and Viv winning the first end 22-20 but only lost out in the further 2 ends 17-21 19-21.

Game 4 also went to 3 ends but this time Bessacarr pair Tim and Brian recovered from losing the first end 22-20 but recovered to control the further 2 ends 21-9 21-9
Games 5 also went the way of Bessacarr with Nathan and Kate winning in a close 2 ender 21-17 21-19

With the match now won for Bessacarr it didn't stop the close games as Games 7 and game 9 both going the distance. Bessacarr pair Nathan and Kate won game 7 21-10, then had a blip 15-21 before winning comfortably 21-9 in the 3rd
The final game of the night was a close match again with Bessacarr pair Viv and Debs losing the first end 16-21, then recovering to win the second end 21-15 and then finally losing the 3rd and final end of the night 20-22 - so close

Shot of the day from our very own new Grandma, Kate, Nathan left wafting his racket in despair as Kate spots his error and quickly lunges to the back hand corner, perfectly hitting the shuttle onto the top of the post and bounced in! Cheers filled the arena!!!!!!!

Match Report - Bessacarr Doncaster A v Cawthorne Away

Bessacarr Doncaster Barnsley A team faced a strong Cawthorne side away at Pen*stone High School where their position in the league didn't do them justice.

It was a great night of badminton with every game and every point evenly contested with 4 of the games going the distance of 3 ends

Top Bessacarr pair of the night Matt and Josh took the first game for Bessacarr, before games 2, 3 and 4 went the way of Cawthorne. Game 2 was a battle, with Brandon and Mark S eventually losing out in a 3 ender 21-14 17-21 21-13. Game 3 saw the return of the veterans of Mark E and Gus, pair up for the first time since pre covid and they turned back the clock with their unique style, flare and full on commitment before eventually losing out in 2 ends 21-16 21-19. Game 4 also went the way of Cawthorne in 2 ends with Mark S and Brandon losing 21-11 21-17

Game 5 saw Matt & Josh take their second game, also in 2 ends after a tight first end 21-18 they comfortably won the second 21-9

Game 6 saw Mark E and Gus again return to court facing the young Cawthorne pair that must have been half their age and held their own. After being behind close to the finish of the first end they fought back to win the end 21-23. Unfortunately that's as good as it got and the young legs won the next 2 ends 21-11 21-10

With the match score currently at 4-2 to Cawthorne, Bessacarr needed some more points in the last 3 games. Unfortunately Cawthorne took game 6 in a straight 2 ends 21-11 21-9 to gate the win for Cawthorne. Game 8 Mark and Gus finished their night in an evenly contested game winning the first set 16-21 they second end was very tight before an injury to Mark E meant they had to retire having lost the second end 21-19.
The final game of the night was again a fantastic game to watch as Matt & Josh comfortably winning the first end saw their lead eroded in a tight second end losing 23-21, before stepping up again in the 3rd to comfortably winning 13-21.

So Cawthorne gained a win turning around the result from earlier in the season in the reverse fixture

Match Report - Bessacarr Doncaster B v Ossett B Home

The Bessacarr Doncaster Club faced its 3rd match in a week as they hosted Ossett B in a top of the table clash in Division 2 of the Barnsley Badminton League at Hungerhill School.

Ossett started the game with intent as they took a 2-0 lead. The games were tight and very much set the scene for the rest of the evening. Game 1 & 2 were edged by Ossett 18-20 20-22 and then 19-21 19-21

Bessacarr hit back with wins in the next 2 games 21-17 21-8 and 21-17 21-18 before the first of the tight 3 enders, Ossett edged out Besscarr in this one 19-21 21-16 13-21. Bessacarr weren't done and secured another point in Game 6 winning 21-17 21-18

3-3 and as the games played out of sequence with all pairs on court, the score line showed how close and how important each point was for the overall match score. Bessacarr picked up game 8 with a good 2 set win 21-13 21-15 before the final 2 games went the distance. Bessacarr battled in Game 9 but lost 14-21 21-16 13-21

With the final game still on court the match result was still very much undecided. Bessacarr won the first end in Game 7, easing to 21-13, however Ossett fought back to win the second end 19-21.

The final set of the match that displayed how close these teams were and how much the top of the table clash meant. It couldn't have been any closer with the match now sitting at 4-4 games each and 1 set each in the final game.

Final end and the final points finely poised at 20-20. A great finish to an excellent match, unfortunately the final 2 points in setting went the way of Ossett B to take the end, the final game and the match.

Massive well done to Ossett who gained a vital win to take top spot in the league leapfrogging Bessacarr.

Match Report - Bessacarr Doncaster A v Staincross B Away

In the second match this week Bessacarr Doncaster A Team took on a tough Staincross B side at Honeywell Sports Centre

Bessacarr Doncaster trio pairings of Gus & Brandon, Glenn & Josh Speakman, and Craig & Josh North fought hard across nine intense rubbers but unfortunately faced a Staincross side that took advantage of their home venue.

Early matches saw some tight scorelines but Staincross took a 2-0 nil lead before top Bessacarr pair of the night Craig and Josh North won the first points for Bessacarr with a tight 3 end win. Craig and Josh managed to fight back after losing the first end 21-17 recovered to secure the next 2 ends 16-21 16-21

At 2-1 to Staincross Glenn and Josh Speakman battled hard for another point for Bessacarr, but after winning the first end 16-21 they couldnt hold off the home pair eventually losing out 21-17 21-14. Another win in game 5 for Staincross meant that they were in toughing distance of the win at 4-1

Craig and Josh took game 6 in 2 straight sets before Staincross grabbed the win in game 7 to take the game beyond the reach of Bessacarr.

At 5-2, it waqs about pride and additional points and Craig and Josh North won their 3rd and final game to win all three on the night and take the score to 5-3 to Staincross.

In the final game of the night Gus and Brandon battled hard pushing the Staincross pair all the way. After losing the first end to 21-19 recovered in the second to win by the same scoreline before eventually being out played in the final set of the night to lose 21-13

Despite the final score tipping 6–3 in favour of Staincross B, Bessacarr A showed great spirit and battled hard. Unlucky Team, lots to take away for the next match

Match Report - Bessacarr Doncaster C v Ossett C Away

Bessacarr Doncaster C Team made a Monday evening trip to Wakefield to face an Ossett C side that were in touching distance of the top 3

Knowing the strength of the Ossett Club, Bessacarr knew that this match was always going to be close encounter, and the match didn't disappoint with some fantastic long rallies, close games and 4 of the 9 games going the full 3 end distance.

The evening started well for Bessacarr as they took the first two games in 2 ends, however, it wasn't easy as Debs and Mark had to come from 16-20 down in the second end to win 22-24.

The next few games Bessacarr and Ossett traded points. with Bessacarr leading 2-1, Game 4 also went to Bessacarr, before game 5 went to Ossett, both in 2 sets. As he night progressed and with Bessacarr leading 3-2 the games got more intense. Game 6 was the first 3 ender of the night and a great battling recovery by Arinze and Brian who pipped the Ossett pair after losing the first end 21-19 16-21 18-21

With Bessacarr 4-2 up Ossett stepped up the pressure winning the next 2 games in 3 ends. Game 7 and Ossett had too much for Debs and Mark, coming out winners at 21-15 15-21 21-13, and in game 8 Arinze and Brian fought hard but lost out 21-19 19-21 21-18

At 4-4 and everything to play for in the final game, it was always going to go the distance. Kieran and Chee-seng took an early lead, winning the first end 12-21 before Ossett struck back 21-19. The 3rd end was nervy and tight before Bessacarr pair won 18-21 enabling Bessacarr to take the match 5-4 and the additional points for the win.

Final Score: 5–4 to Bessacarr Doncaster Barnsley C

Massive well done to the whole team for battling performance and win

Bessacarr vs Abbeydale D.
Sheffield feathers league division 2

Looking to continue their unbeaten run, Doncaster Bessacarr’s Sheffield A team faced off against second in the league Abbeydale D for their first home match of the season. Having had two players drop out within two days of the fixture, Bessacarr were fortunate enough to field a full team thanks to super-subs Nathan and Josh S.

Unfortunately, Abbeydale D were not able to achieve this, but having won four of their seven matches this season they still had potential to be one of the stronger sides in the league (even with four players). Even more unfortunately for Abbeydale, they were missing their main man. Despite this, the two technically strong uni-esque pairs battled valiantly against Bessacarr with some great rallies, pushing two games to three, but were ultimately out-classed by Bessacarr's seasoned tactical awareness, clinical nature, and sheer consistency.

Bessacarr also capitalised on their home advantage, which consisted of a wet and dusty floor (something that Bessacarr may be subject to themselves in their next match away against second to bottom Phoenix).

This inevitably led to another 9:0 win for Bessacarr.

Well done all on another great victory, and a special shout out to Josh and Nathan for stepping in at the last minute and winning all their games. We’ve definitely made an impression in the league thus far, but we don’t intend to stop! Let’s continue this unbeaten run into Phoenix’s swimming baths next month. Fingers crossed we get to play three matches this time.

Match Report - Bessacarr Doncaster B v Honeywell A

Bessacarr Doncaster B took a Monday evening trip to bottom of the league Honeywell A

Bessacarr sent a good strength side to try and maintain the push for promotion, however the first game of the night set the tone for the match.

Honeywell battle hard and played well above their position with 4 games going the distance and 3 ends going to setting.

Game 1 went to 3 ends, but after losing the first end Bessacarr pair managed to recover and won the game 21.18 16.21 18.21
Bessacarr took a 2.0 leads with game 2 being won comfortably in 2 ends before game 3 also went to a full 3 ends. Bessacarr took the leads winning 16.21 before Honeywell won the next 2 ends 21.17 21.17

2.1 to Bessacarr and game 4 was another battle. Adam and Toni loat the first set 21.18 before recovering very well to win the game 10.21 15.21

Another game and another 3 ender. But Bessacarr had the quality to win again. Winning the first end 15.21 but managed to lose the second end 21.13 before taking complete control in the 3rd 9.21

With one more game required for the victory Bessacarr stepped up and managed to win all the remaining games in 2 ends, not that they weren't close.
The 2nd end of Game 7 went close as Bessacarr won 20.22. Game 8 was also close in the first with Bessacarr winning the first end 20.22 and in the final game the 2nd end also went to setting with a 20.22 win.

A great win for Bessacarr Doncaster B and another 10 valuable points.

Result 8-1 win

Match Report - Bessacarr Doncaster A v Staincross A

Bessacarr Doncaster A welcomed league champions Staincross A to Hungerhill School for tye first game of 2026

The match was always going to be extremely tough, but an early setback with the injury of Will meant Bessacarr had to concede 3 games straight away

The remaining pairs of Matthew & Josh Speakman and Josh North & Brandon fought hard to gain some points, unfortunately the Staincross team were too strong for Josh North & Brandon and dispite some really close ends, of 23.21 21.19 and 21.18 they couldn't grab a win and lost their games in 2 straight ends.

Matthew and Josh Speakman had a little more success with some really close games, winning 1 game 21.18 21.17 in the first game. Their second and third games were really closely contested. Game 2 the one the first set 21.14 before losing the second end in a real nail biter 26.24, the 3rd end again was close but Staincross edged it 21.15
Matthew and Josh Speakman's final game was again a 3 end battle. Winning the first set 21.15 the second end again went to setting and again losing in a nail biter 24.22 this time Matthew and Josh didn't let a repeat of the previous game winning the final end 21.16 gaining a second valuable point for the evening

A defeat for Bessacarr Doncaster A but still lots of positives and a fantastic effort to take away and head into the next game with

Hopefully the injury to Will isn't too bad and he returns to the court soon.
