Match Report:

Full squad today with 4 subs. Looking to build on last weeks 1st league win of the season.

We tried to start better this week. And we did! We went 1 nil up when Ewan ran onto a through ball from Josh. He beat the on rushing keeper to it and headed past him! After the goal we seemed to go backwards in performance terms, rushing in possession and wasting good positions. They got an equaliser out of nothing. A set piece, the 2nd ball fell to their centre half who had no one marking him. He had time to bring it down and he finished well. Just before half time they went ahead. Adam attempted a clearance wide of his goal but it wasn't the best, and their cm finished first time from a long way out. Great finish to be fair.

Half time we knew the game was there to be won. We just needed to work harder and want it more.

We scored farily early on in the half. The impressive Ewan C the provider this time for Ewan Mac to get his 2nd despite the best effort of the defender to hack him down as he ran through. Deservedly level! The game was never really in control, very scrappy and the pitch was awful which made playing football quite tricky. We did get the winner. And like last week, it came from the bench. This time it was Ross. Long ball flicked on by Ben, and Ross let a rocket off from 30 yards out which caught the keeper out as it went over his head!
We did nearly concede right at the end but we dug in and held on for the 2nd win on the bounce.

Match report
Sherwin Athletic 3 - 4 Furnace Inn (HT 2-1)

The lads rocked up this morning still in search of their first league win of the season and restricted to a 12 man squad due to drop outs.

We started badly again.... a long throw into the box wasn't dealt with on two occasions before their big striker managed to get his arse up off the floor and fire into the roof of the net. We did respond well after a shakey 15 minutes or so. And a familiar route to goal got us level. Long throw specialist Phil found Big Ben whose flick on seemed to be looping into the far post but Josh made double sure and headed in from 5 cms out!! The half did get a little end to end in the last 10 minutes with both teams going close to going ahead. Tom ran onto a bouncing clearance and caught a sweet effort but straight at the keeper from 18 yards out. Then Sherwin hit the underside of the crossbar shortly after (potentially a save from Adam?) Annoyingly right on the HT whistle, Sherwin went ahead. A shot came in from 20-25 yards and Sam flicked his foot out to block but it inadvertently wrong footed Adam and went in 🙈

2nd half was really impressive from the lads particularly the final 30. A great call from gaffer Sam to invert our shirts as the sun in our eyes made the close colours hard to point out our players. We clicked into gear and scored 3 goals in a 15 minute period. Super sub Matt flicked home another long throw and the near post to get us level. Then Ewan Mac latched onto a huge volleyed clearance from Ben. Held off the eager defender before firing into the bottom corner!! 2-3 up!! Then the 4th came again from Matt. Some good work in the middle released Matt through 1v1 and he finished very cleverly over the rushing keeper to give us some breathing space. Sherwin didn't look like scoring in the half really, but they did get a lifeline with a couple of minutes left. Tom with a double challenge in the box, but the 2nd deemed a foul (rightly so🙈). They converted, but we held on fairly comfortably to bag the win!!!
Final score 3-4
Great effort from the lads. Good attitude throughout in a physically tasty game

This week saw the Furnace Inn FC face Willington FC away from home in a late pitch change (moved to Twyford Road which was abysmal!)
Furnace had a very strong squad available but so did Willington and both teams with a full roster of 16.
The game began with Willington on the front foot with an early opener catching us napping from a corner, half volley from around the peno spot unchallenged.
Unfortunately, this upset did nothing to rally Furnace as Willington bagged a 2nd goal as we continually failed to stop the supply. Cross into the box finished with relative ease.
Furnace began to get more of the game and a couple of half chances began to go our way although against the play, another cross heading towards their striker was met with a push in the back, giving Willington a freebie penalty. Very well taken peno leaving Northy with no chance.
Just prior to the end of the first half, a dangerous long throw from skipper Phil, flicked on at the near post and buried by Dan Hallsworth at the far post.
HT 3-1.
The second half saw a totally different game as Furnace dominated the game throughout with Willington looking very average giving some breathing space to our CMs to run the game. Specially Josh showing his playmaking ability in the middle.
Furnaces second goal came from through ball to a lost Tom Jennings (who should have been at RB) at left wing forward, crossed across the 6 yard box and Ewan Mac slotting home at the second time of asking.
3-2 with Furnace pressing hard, one way traffic… a couple of chances falling to Josh, the first one forcing a great save from the keeper and the second found the keeper out of his net and the clipped lob cleared off the line by the defender.
Today just wasn’t our day as the game finished 3-2 to Willington. A game of two different halves and we gave ourselves an uphill struggle from the first half performance.

After a few challenging weeks and not being able to muster a squad together, we had just about scraped a team together. 2 drop outs in the morning left us with 12. But luckily Daz could get down later in the game to give us another option on the bench.

1st half started badly for us. A goal conceded after about 8 minutes with Stockbrook punishing our high line and pinging diags in over our defence. It was a bit of an onslaught after the goal but we managed to avoid conceding. With one of our first attacks, we grabbed a corner. Tom put in a good delivery, Ben got up managed to get the ball down for Phil to latch onto and volley in. Against the run of play but we were level. About 10 minutes later we were behind again. A great run from their young lad (Jags?) Who skipped passed 3 or 4 players before being tripped in the box by Ben. Penalty converted, 2-1. It was then 3-1 after 35 minutes. A bit of a soft one, from a corner. The 2nd ball wasn't dealt with properly and it bobbled off the bewildered Tom's head into the path of their striker for the easiest chance you're likely to get.
We didn't let this misfortune dampen our spirits. We battled on until the whistle, and then iut of nowhere, Max unleashed a venomous 1st time hit from about 25 yards into the side netting. Might have taken a slight deflection along the way but the keeper couldn't reach it.

HT 3-2 - the team talk was about keeping the hard work going, not saying away from a challenge and being as clinical as possible if and when we would get chances.

2nd half - the team talk was implemented seamlessly as within 10 minutes we had turned the game around much to the shock of Stockbrook. 3rd goal, Ben was bizarrely hacked down off the ball in the area after the ball had already found its way to the half way line. Penalty!! Jack F expertly converted into the bottom right corner. 5 minutes later, from a deep free kick inside our half, Tom made a great last minute run from left back, Ben launched a cracking long ball right into his path, he nodded across goal for Dan H to tap in. Text book Sunday league goal. The belief from this point was immense. And the lads dug in, kept their shape and made it really frustrating for Stockbrook. Reducing them to mainly shots from long range. They did get better chances in the last 5 minutes and should have scored a couple of times. But just as you think they've wasted their chances, they didn't even need one. Dan and GK Adam with a mix up and getting I eachothers way led to and own goal from Dan H which tied the game at 4-4. The drama wasn't over, with a minute or so left we had a chance to win it, Tom stoke the ball in the Central area and found Ross on the edge of the box, he ran through but his shot was well saved by the goalkeeper.

Overall I think a draw was fair, Stockbrook are a great team and had a full compliment of players at their disposal . But our spirit, aggressiveness and communication got us that point which could have almost been 3.
All the best to Stocky, and we go again next league game, more of the same attitude lads.

Full time result:
Furnace 1-5 AFC Mackworth

Not good enough today. Alot of players missing. Conceded 4 poor goals in the first half, mostly due to our midfield being over run and not picking up the runners in the box. Mackworth are a good side so credit to them but we need to be much more solid in these types of games. 2nd half was an improvement and Jack Tivey grabbed a goal on his 1st appearance of the season.

Onwards to next week vs Stockbrook which will be another tough game but one that we are more than capable of getting something from 💪

This week’s game saw Furnace match up in the Garett Woolley Cup in what seemed inevitable given we draw they every year in the cup!
The day began with a no show from the ref causing a late kick off (thanks to James Gadsby for stepping in to ref).
The Wilmot broke the deadlock within the first 10 minutes, taking advantage of a very high backline, crossing early for a tap in.
Unfortunately, Wilmot rose to the occasion and continued to press. Two shots from the edge of the box finding there way into the back of the net. Soft and disappointing goals for us to concede.
Furnace scored an equaliser from a long goal kick, fluffed by Wilmot and Jack F pinging one into the back of the net.
The equaliser before the break seemed to have Wilmot fired up as we spent long periods of time without the ball and then creating plenty of half chances although many were from outside the box and not really causing many issues.
Frustratingly, one of the shots squirmed underneath our keeper making it 4-1.
With Wilmot feeling the game was in the bag, they made loads of changes and the fresh legs helped them as they pushed and made it 5-1 with their sub scoring a screamer, cutting inside and pinging it into the top right.
Many would have thought we were dead and buried but the Furnace rallied to get a goal back with a hard tackle won by Sam T providing an assist to Ewan M slotting it past the keeper to make it 5-2.
Wilmot inexplicably lost their heads and within 10 minutes, the Furnace added two more… Fraz setting up Ewan M for a second and Max setting up Jack F for his second!
A final push saw the Furnace FC hit the bar through a deflected shot from Zach.
Final whistle blew to confirm a 5-4 score line but with the Wilmots arseholes twitching like rabbits noses. 🐇 👃🏼

In the words of our skipper, “that’s the most enjoyable loss I’ve ever played in!” 😂
