World Su***de Prevention Day asks us to change the narrative on su***de.
We think one part of that narrative urgently needs changing:
Who do we expect to start the conversation?
Much su***de-prevention messaging still places the first action on the person experiencing distress:
Speak up.
Reach out.
Ask for help.
Those messages matter.
But they cannot carry prevention alone.
Some people will never clearly disclose what they are experiencing before crisis.
Distress may first become visible through changes in behaviour, relationships, routine or connection.
So prevention must also equip the people around us to:
Recognise earlier.
Reach in sooner.
Respond safely.
At Tough To Talk, we describe the gap between support being available and somebody feeling able, safe or ready to use it as The Reach Problem.
Closing that gap requires more than awareness.
It requires trusted people.
Safe pathways.
Sustainable services.
Cultures where earlier conversations are possible.
And systems capable of learning from what is actually happening.
This week's closure of PAPYRUS and HOPELINE247 is also a sobering reminder that su***de-prevention services themselves need sustainable infrastructure.
World Su***de Prevention Day matters.
But prevention cannot belong to one day.
Prevention isn't a poster.
It's infrastructure.
