Shinden Fudo Ryu (Tradition of the immovable god school)

Dakentaijutsu

This closely resembles Kempo Jujutsu.
The hard striking methods are drawn from Chinese Kempo, including low line kicking.
There is also hard grappling method, chin na done like Judo.

The hand and body tool conditioning is not as fierce as Koto Ryu, but still involved hitting trees to toughen the tools, and also ripping bark to develop the "seizing" methods.

There is also the use of trees to practice the taijutsu for throws and locks

This ryu teaches oversized weapons - instead of a simple Bo a ninja would use a whole branch or log, his taijutsu allowing him the movement to weild it

this ryu also made oversized weapons - an axe, a hammer, and a sword, for use with it's taijutsu

This ryu promotes the "principle of nature", was big on training in nature (a lot of Grass Days) and natural body movement

It also uses hojojutsu - the art of using a rope in combat, a lot like a rodeo lassoo

Kuki shinden Ryu (Nine demons school)

Happo Hikenjutsu

Weapons
sword, spear, halberd, bo, hanbo,
jutte, tessen kusuri-kama

taijutsu

heiho
military strategy

Started as a battlefield art, techniques brought back by masters who survived to teach

The Bojutsu was devised in battle when the commander's spear broke and he used the staff to defeat the remaining enemy with the kuji kiri 9 cuts method

the Bo of Takagi yoshin ryu is taken from kukishinden

the taijutsu of kukishinden is based on takagi yoshin ryu

Bojutsu in the ryu holds elements of spear and halberd and is used in a deceptive manner

it is similar to other Jo schools of Japan, and differs from the Bojutsu of Okinawa, which is part of Karate and Kempo

shorter sticks include hanbo and tanbo - although there is a part of taijutsu that uses them as close range weapons, similar to a karate weapon

Kenjutsu in this ryu has a signature upward slash at angle 12

it also uses long and short swords, swords in pairs, throwing knife, and bo shuriken

Naginata - halberd - the ryu owes it's creation to the battlefield halberd and the broken halberd that started it's bojutsu

Hanbo - a similar origin in that a warrior's spear was cut in half so he used the half staff. Further developments of the hanbo come from the movements of the sword. It also has a section based on taijutsu kempo.

Spear - sojutsu - yari - a difficult weapon to use as it relies on distance and timing. Similar to the Wing Chun pole.

Togakure Ryu (Hidden door school)

Ninjutsu

The primary school for ninja tactics, techniques and tools

biken jutsu - ninja sword - the short straight sword
kenjutsu fighting skills and iaijutsu drawing skills

Yonpo Hiden - the four secrets:
shuriken and metsubishi
shuko claws
shinondake - blowgun/snorkel
shoge - blade and rope/ring

This ryu is 800 years old

The taijutsu for Togakure ryu is taken from GyokkoRyu KoshiJutsu and Koto Ryu KoppoJutsu

taijutsu kenpo uses shuko, and always has options for throwing shuriken and metsubushi

shinobi gaeshi - the taihenjutsu that is used for escape and evasion is based on the sanshin no kata, both in technique, and in the interpretation of the elements godai and gogyo

santo tonko - use of shuriken and metsubushi in vanishing

henso jutsu - disguise and impersonation

sakki - the sensing of intention, as in the shidoshi test

The famous Ninja Hattori Hanzo was from this ryu

When the Toda family inherited the ryu they added their own systems of Kumogakure ryu, Gyokko Ryu and Koto Ryu

Koto Ryu (Tiger knocking down School)

"to knock the Tiger down with the tips of the fingers"

Koppo Jutsu

Very much like kyukushin karate this method involves linear strikes to break bones - aggressive, linear attacks using the larger bones to strike the weaker ones of your opponent

First Rule - hit fu***ng hard

This ryu adopts training methods seen in Okinawa and later in Japan in kyukushin - wood breaking to perfect the bone breaking methods - striking sand and gravel, then later stone to condition the hands and other striking tools

The 10th Soke of Gyokko Ryu founded the Koto Ryu

This ryu also teaches sword, and uses the four point shaken shuriken

A school of koppojutsu, (骨法術) , shurikenjutsu, and kenjutsu

Gyokko Ryu (Jewelled tiger school)

Koshijutsu

The oldest ryuha.

Based on Chinese Kempo, with roots in Tiger Crane, strikes are made to muscles and nerves - a lot of Second Rule. There is also Chinese Chin Na - muscle seizing and tearing.

Closely resembles kung fu, tiger crane, with some dragon, snake.

Taijutsu kihon happo comes from this ryu.

The changing of direction mid flow gives us evasion and distance in defence, adds torque and power in our counters, and makes it hard for the opponent to read us so he in turn can't counter.

Indirect attack.

The 10th Soke of Gyokko Ryu founded the Koto Ryu school of koppojutsu

The Evolution of the Martial Arts Dojo

Have you ever seen the James Bond film "You Only Live Twice"?

Filmed in the 60s, Bond is stationed in Japan and attends Tiger Tanaka's "Ninja" training camp. This isn't actually a "Ninja" camp at all, but it's a perfect example of a traditional Japanese Budo dojo.

We see lots of Martial Arts going on at the same time - Karate, Judo, Aikido, Kenjtsu, Bojutsu. Rather than being in a dojo hall, the training goes on outside (it's a nice day after all). The point being there are not seperate classes for all the different disciplines. They are all being taught and practiced at the same time.

That's how it was traditionally at Japanese dojos. Everyone trained in every discipline, moving around in small manageable groups between the various Sensei present.

Also, all these "different" arts have a common origin.
Karate is taken from two schools of Okinawan Kempo.
Judo is made up of bits from various schools of Jujutsu.
The Jujutsu schools themselves have a variety of techniques from different sources.
Aikido is a mix of Jujutsu and Kenjutsu.

When Martial Art reached the Western world everybody started specialising in one art, then one style of that art. You "only" did karate, then you "only" did Shotokan, or "only" did Kyukushinkai. Students and clubs focussed on the differences rather than the similarities.

When the UFC, and it's subsequent inspired events, arrived in the 90s, it was originally art vs art. Karate vs Kickboxing, Judo vs karate, Kung Fu vs Jujutsu.
As the competitions evolved, people began "cross training". Kickboxers learnt some grappling. Grapplers learned how to punch and kick.

This gave birth to what is referred to now as "Mixed Martial Arts". Students are attending sessions which incorporate techiques and tactics from different systems again, and learning the similarities and the blends. Once again people are practicing integrated systems and pressure testing them in competition.

As we begin the second decade of the 21st Century, things have come full circle. People are practicing "everything" again.

At the Shiro Tora White Tiger Academy The core class is our Unarmed Combat-Self Protection - Threat Response - Street Fighting system.

This is a set of drills students practice with each other.

There is no punching and kicking the air, though we do incorporate shadow boxing.

There is no hard oriental "discipline", we train in a relaxed and friendly manner.

There is no bowing, we prefer a smile and a handshake.

There is no half hour "warm up", just some basic stretching.
This is not an aerobics class or a yoga class, it is a Martial Arts skills class. You spend your time building skills.

This is real time one-on-one CQC drilling, taken from our core arts of Karate, Jujutsu and Kung Fu (which itself is mainly Wing Chun).

There is karate style sparring and chi sao sparring for those who want to do it.
Nobody is forced to spar until ready, but those who want to can "get stuck in" on their first night if they wish.

There is no special uniform or gi, just wear what you feel comfortable in.

The class then bifurcates into Kickboxing and Kobudo (weapons) for those who want to learn these skills.

For Kickboxing you need your own protective gear for partner drills and sparring.
You can bring your own or buy from us at a reasonable rate.
There is some kit on loan for those who want to "try before they buy".
There is impact work on focus pads, Thai pads, and shields. Again, to get maximum benefit students are encouraged to buy their own pads, though there will be some provided.

For Kobudo students need to buy their own weapons depending on what they want to get involved with:

A pair of sticks and a knife.
A pair of tonfa.
A set of nunchaku, both foam safety and wood/chain.
Bokken, shinai, jo and bo.

There will be weapons provided for those who want to "try before they buy".

There is basic weapon sparring with sticks, nunchaku, sword and staff.
Later we will look into acquiring armour for full contact weapons sparring.

Then we put the mats down and practice our throws and takedowns, and spar “randori”. Then we practice groundgrappling, and groundfighting, which is not the same thing as “groundfighting” involves strikes.

Finally we put it all together and practice Vale Tudo from outrange, to kicking and punching, to vertical grappling, to the ground. We even have sessions where we incorporate weapons – from outrange to the ground.

In the 60s in LA, Bruce Lee came up with the concept of practicing techniques and drills from many different arts and called his concept "Jeet Kune Do". One of the key concepts was "Using no way as way, having no limitation as limitation".

It's something we still aspire to today.

The Sangaku Jime "Triangle Choke" is an old JJ technique that goes back to the old Ryuha.

It is in Judo as part of the black belt newaza - any Judoka 3rd dan or above will be well versed in this move.

Gracie Jiu Jitsu, as part of it's self defence combatives, consider it the ultimate technique - the Gracie Academy symbol is the triangle for that reason.

To quote Grandmaster Helio (The Guardfather) "there are no tough guys in the choke"

Back in 1985 we went to see Lethal Weapon at the cinema with some buddies. As you know the triangle choke is used at the end of the final fight. After the film our friends asked what it is he actually did, if it was a real move, and why the arm is inside that way, wouldn't it work better without the arm, just use your legs, stuff like that. (Rorion was the fight advisor for this film and coached Mel Gibson for this scene)

We were able to explain the standard sleeper choke, both standing and if it goes to the ground when taking the back.
We showed it as a punch defence, how you block and use his own arm as a choke, standing, then on the ground, which is Judo is the kata gatame hold. We then showed how, if you are on your back not on top, you use your leg and his arm to do the "Mel Gibson" choke, as it was being called.
A lot of people had a lot of fun trying this out over the next few weeks.

10 years later, 1995, and we are on the 4th UFC when Royce wins by choking out Dan The Beast Severn with the triangle.
At this time there was no real internet, You Tube, not much in the way of cable TV over here, no DVDs, so we got the UFCs on VHS tapes from America. People who watched were raving about the triangle choke, and at the time it was the first time anyone had ever seen it, certainly in a TV match.

Our response was "remember 10 years ago after Lethal Weapon when we first explained it to you..."

10 years later, 2005, and "Brazilian Jujutsu" is the new big MA craze and MMA classes had started popping up everywhere (the term MMA had just been coined). A lot of people had gained a blue belt in the "new" BJJ, which allowed them to set up a class and teach and many "Garages" were forming.

So people were going to BJJ classes, taught by the newly qualified blue belts, and learning this brilliant new triangle choke that nobody had seen before

"Remember 20 years ago after Lethal Weapon when we explained to you..."

In 2015, another decade later, and BJJ and MMA clubs have popped up all over the UK, with many instructors now having a BJJ black belt to teach with. People were signing up for classes and were being shown this brilliant new triangle choke for the first time.

"Remember 30 years ago after Lethal Weapon..."

No doubt in 2025 we will be teaching the triangle choke and reminding people how we first explained this move 40 years ago after we watched Lethal Weapon.

A "new" technique that has truly stood the test of time!
