Leptin is one of the key hormones that regulate energy metabolism in the human body. It directly affects both the feeling of hunger and appetite, and the feeling of fullness when eating food. Since the place of synthesis of this hormone is adipose tissue, thanks to leptin, the brain receives indirect information about what is body weight and how much energy is stored in fat reserves¹.

The hormone leptin (along with the hormone ghrelin) is one of the most important regulators of appetite. The normal level of these hormones tells the brain that there are enough energy reserves in the body, thus disabling hunger. In turn, a decreasing level of leptin is a direct signal that the energy will end soon and urgently need to seek reinforcement.

The difference between ghrelin and leptin is that the level of ghrelin depends on meals (before eating, its level is higher, and after eating, it is lower), and the level of leptin depends on the number of fat cells in the body (the more fat in the body, the higher leptin). At the same time, following a diet with a calorie restriction increases the level of both hormones, provoking the emergence of a persistent feeling of hunger.
