AFC Dishers 4–1 C&N United FC

After a few results that had morale lower than Brad’s hairline, we arrived for our final pre-season game with two more dropouts and low numbers once again. We knew it was going to be a tough one.

Things got even better when we inspected the home pitch and discovered what could only be described as the Grand Canyon of football pitches, complete with suspicious amounts of glass scattered around. After a quick discussion with the health and safety department (which was basically just the ref saying “no”), kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes and we moved pitches.

Eventually, we got underway and started brightly. High pressing forced C&N into long balls, which were comfortably swept up by our back line. Good communication followed, and for a brief period we actually looked like a team who knew what we were doing.

Then came the first goal.

Jord stepped up to take a corner, spotted Brad’s enormous bald head shining brightly at the back post and delivered it perfectly. Brad headed it back across goal, where Luke came absolutely tanking through a crowd of players to finish it off.

1–0 Dishers.

Straight from the restart, we kept the pressure on. C&N passed the ball back to their keeper, who decided to make things interesting with a poor pass to his full-back. Jack pounced, swept the ball up and put it across goal for James, who absolutely leathered it through the one hole in the keeper’s gloves and into the back of the net.

We went into half-time with a comfortable two-goal lead and probably our best 45 minutes of pre-season.

Unfortunately, someone must have told us that football was supposed to be difficult, because the second half started with us looking unsettled. We stopped controlling the ball and seemingly decided that every opportunity to smash it out for a throw-in was an opportunity worth taking.

We then made a substitution, apparently with the sole intention of sending one of our own lads into battle to get bullied, and C&N managed to pull one back.

Thankfully, we eventually settled again. Tired legs were starting to show, but with two substitutes available we found another gear.

A perfectly timed ball over the top from the captain allowed James to race through and calmly slot it past the keeper.

3–1

Then came the inevitable.

Another ball into the box caused chaos, and who else was there to meet it than Brad and his generously sized forehead. Brad powered the ball past the keeper to make it four.

4–1

From there, we saw the game out comfortably and finished pre-season with a much-needed win and a much-improved performance.

There are still a few things to work on, but compared to the previous few weeks, this was a massive step in the right direction. The lads worked hard, battled through the tired legs and, most importantly, actually looked like we knew what we were doing for large parts of the game.

AFC Dishers 1–5 AFC Bowling Green

We turned up ready to go, with a quick warm-up and a few new faces joining the squad. Unfortunately, the first five minutes looked like we’d all met each other five minutes before kick-off.

We started deep and absorbed plenty of pressure, but gradually settled into the game. The passing started flowing, we created some decent opportunities and, most importantly, remembered which direction we were supposed to be attacking.

Then came the moment nobody saw coming…

A lovely ball over the top caught James, who clipped it beautifully across the face of the defence for Jack to finish. Yes, Jack. The same Jack who normally sees the goal as a personal invitation to launch the ball into orbit. This time, however, he kept it down and found the net. 1–0 Dishers.

We continued to press, with both sides creating and missing chances. Eventually, Bowling Green found an equaliser with a lovely shot over our 6'4" keeper, proving that apparently being 6'4" isn't quite enough to cover the entire goal.

We got back into the game and looked dangerous again, before a rather theatrical dive earned Bowling Green a penalty. We did everything we could to put the taker off, including getting in his way and generally being annoying, but he kept his composure and slotted it away.

We then had a penalty of our own and the chance to level things up, but the Bowling Green keeper produced a brilliant save to deny us.

Half time: AFC Dishers 1–2 AFC Bowling Green

We came out for the second half looking strong and managed to hold Bowling Green off for a while. Unfortunately, tired legs eventually started to show, and a lapse in concentration allowed them to add another.

Then came one of those goals where even the scorer probably couldn't explain exactly what happened. A fluke cross floated into the box, sailed over our keeper and somehow found its way into the net. 1–4.

Bowling Green finished the game with a free kick into the box. We switched off as the ball came back across the face of goal, leaving two Bowling Green players completely unmarked at the back post. One of them duly finished it off to make it 1–5.

A disappointing scoreline, but there were definitely positives to take. It was an improvement from previous weeks, and for large parts of the game we showed what we are capable of. Unfortunately, we're still not quite hitting our potential for the full 90 minutes.

Back to training we go, ready to put the work in and get ourselves prepared for the next one against C&N. 🔴⚫️
