Working on our today - assisted and not for very long (a few seconds) but feeling the muscles engage and being able to lift my feet off the floor feels like a huge win! I can tell I'm gaining strength and that's basically the point. I'm not likely to need to hang from a bar in real life for any reason but this challenge is a fun way to build strength that I take with me into my day to day tasks. We're lucky that we get to have this gym mostly to ourselves on a Saturday morning so we don't feel like we're being watched or judged - that makes us much more likely to attempt these fun and sometimes slightly silly challenges. Thanks to my partner in deadhang "crime" for offering encouragement and taking these pics for prosperity! 💜💪🏻

This is also just a little reminder that slow progress can still be fun and still be celebrated! We can feel the progress in our bodies and we have fun doing it - for me, that's more important than performing the actual move for external validation!

We're dancing tonight! If you're looking for some size-inclusive beginner friendly dance based movement, you are in safe hands with us! Whether you're looking for a stepping stone to build your confidence to go to something more high energy, or looking for something less intense that offers you the benefits of getting active without feeling out of your depth - this class is for YOU!

June marks SEVEN years of MissFits Workout in our community (and over six of those years have been online too!) - and our Monday night class is where it all began. We may have changed locations and seen lots of wonderful MissFits come and go (and come back again!) but it really is (and always will be) the same 💜🎉

I read about CMAT's body being under scrutiny (again) and something in her post really spoke to me.

She is right - We didn't *choose* these bodies.

But we all get to choose whether or not to be a b*tch to others about theirs.

Science tells us that our bodies respond better to kindness and respect (it actually leads to better health outcomes) - so if you *really* care about people's health you'd be choosing kindness over criticism. And not just when it comes to bodies.

Took my friend to to try out their gym this morning! We're heading into the super quiet summer months where there is hardly anyone on campus (or in the gym) so it is a perfect time to go and explore all the machines we haven't tried yet! I didn't take any pics/videos inside today - but remembered and snapped these as we were leaving (especially as we're both repping for MissFits Workout today! 😂). I think you can see the post workout joy on our faces 😍🎉

This came up in my memories on FB this week - it reminded me that I've been consistently exercising for more than 12 years! 12 years ago I was still moving to try and change the way my body looked - but whilst I was increasing my physical activity, getting stronger and growing in confidence, I was also reading more about body positivity, anti-diet and health at every size. My physical activity increased, I worked out what I enjoyed and what I hated and by the time my weight plateaued (again) I was moving for joy, not punishment. So for the first time, I didn't decide it "wasn't working" and give it all up (again).

I've started over on my exercise "journey" so many times in my life. I stopped every time I wasn't seeing the changes the industry had promised. I figured I was doing it wrong. I was told I wasn't doing enough or I wasn't doing it intensely enough or I was eating too much or something else that implied the fault lied with me (rather than the lies we've been "fed").

This time I didn't give up. Because I was enjoying the activities I was taking part in (Zumba, street dance, circuit training mostly), I felt connected to the people in the classes I went to (I made friends there, so I didn't have to rely on my friends going), I was focusing on the broader benefits of exercising (cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility, stamina, confidence and competence) and I stopped focusing on what my body looked like - because I knew that the size of my body did not define my worth, my health or my beauty.

Twelve years of consistent movement. The longest period of exercise in my life. More than my entire time at school. What an incredible gift to myself. I know it would not have been possible if I was still entrenched in diet culture.

I believe we all deserve to make our own choices when it comes to things like what we eat and how we engage with exercise. I'm really happy with mine. 💜

Despite the heatwave and the school holidays, I've got lots of desk-based (PhD related) work to be getting on with this week. But I have my hairy potato friend keeping me company! Sadly, he hasn't learned (yet) that lying right by the wheels of my office chair is a terrible idea. I also haven't learned how to stay focussed on an important but tedious task. We both have a lot to learn, I guess!

Something a little bit different - as you know, I'm a PhD student but I'm posting on behalf of my fellow PhD student who is looking for 11-16 year old participants for her study. My two teens took part today and found it interesting taking part in real life research! If you are local to , maybe your kids would be interested too? It's a really cool study that involves a little bit of physical activity and some questionnaires. Contact Mariam directly using the email address on the poster ([email protected]). Thank you!

If you have links to Colchester please share so we can help Mariam find some more participants! 💜

The research tells me that 20 years of yo-yo dieting, inconsistent exercising (with significant periods of inactivity after every new regime), weight cycling and disordered eating have done more harm to my health and wellbeing than just being fat.

I can't do anything to change my past. But in the decade since giving up dieting and intentional weight loss, I've built a more sustainable relationship with my exercise and eating behaviours. I've got better sleep behaviours (thanks to my CPAP machine). I'm stronger and fitter than I was. My body is properly nourished and I've had the energy and brain space to train as a fitness professional and complete a masters degree to build my knowledge and understanding of higher weight people and exercise. I'm now working towards a PhD looking at weight stigma and physical activity. I do all of this "for my health" and because I care deeply about the health of my fellow fatties.

My lived experience and my work tells me that physical activity is a low risk option that offers us so many health and wellbeing benefits - even with very small amounts of manageable movement. I've seen huge improvements in clients from gentle chair-based activities - it doesn't have to be going from zero movement to Burpees and a park run to be beneficial!

Regardless of any other health choices you might be making, I'd really encourage you to find ways to include movement into your plans. Start small and consistent - committing to 10 minutes a couple of times a week would be a great place to start. 💜

When you're running a small business and you're in it, doing all the stuff that needs to be done, worrying about how things are going to grow, if people are going to show up, it's incredibly easy to lose sight of how far you've come.

I had a visit from a work friend who I was working with when I started training as a fitness instructor. Showing her the Movement Hub made me take a moment to notice what we've managed to create here, in this little space tucked away in a community centre in a cul-de-sac!

It's not just the physical space and the equipment - although that is impressive in itself! It's the opportunity it has created, the community we've nurtured, the friendships that grow from being with others.

There are lots of business milestones I'd hoped to hit by now - and financially I haven't really been anything close to successful. But I still feel like this space and the amazing stuff that happens here is a huge success! Especially in the current climate. Taking up space is so important and I'm so proud that we've got our own dedicated space, with some great equipment and almost limitless options to move our bodies free from judgement.

I honestly don't know what the future holds but I am excited to continue to push forward in this work, in this wonderful space and build something meaningful for my marvellous MissFits. Both physically here in the Hub and those who remain connected with us online.

Remember, you don't have to be here in Colchester UK to feel the MissFits Magic - you can join us online for our dance based classes (live or on demand) from wherever you are in the world! So if you are looking for fun, friendly and accessible movement opportunities, taught by a plus size fitness instructor - you're in safe and capable hands here! 💜
