Great Mini ascent of the West Rib of Grasmoor End and onto Grasmoor. Followed by a windy and wet walk across to Hopegill Head and Whiteside. A real sense of adventure right on the doorstep and perfect when the conditions are wet and miserable.

HOW MANY DO YOU KNOW?

What does it all mean? We see all sorts of names and local dialect on maps. But where does it all come from?

Below is an image of collected names that you may find in the Lake District Fells. How many do you know? Add some if I have miss any.

The Cumbrian mountain dialect—often called "fell-talk"—is a unique blend of ancient Celtic, Old Norse, and Northumbrian English. Shaped by the isolated valleys and rugged fells of the Lake District, it evolved through successive waves of settlers and invaders who left their distinct marks on the local landscape and vocabulary.

Key Influences on Cumbrian, Celtic and Cumbric Roots: Before English arrived, the region spoke Cumbric, a Brittonic Celtic language related to Old Welsh. It survives in place names like Penrith (hill) and Carlisle (fort), and famously in traditional sheep-counting numerals (yan, tyan, tethera, methera).

Old Norse Invaders: Viking settlers in the 9th and 10th centuries heavily influenced local topography and everyday words. Landscape terms like tarn (small lake), thwaite (clearing), and howe (hill), alongside words like yam (home) and laal (little), come directly from Old Norse.

Old Northumbrian English: Anglo-Saxon arrivals brought Old Northumbrian, giving the dialect deep common roots with the Scots language and unique grammatical habits like the Northern Subject Rule.

Do you carry a group shelter?
Come wind, rain or shine I will also carry a form of shelter with me when on the hills. Great for lunch time if its raining or windy on the hills or more importantly if you or a party member get injured one of your first priorities is to find shelter from the elements.

Here we are a couple of years ago with WMIC Sam on our way up to Helvellyn with a group.

River Liza, upper Ennerdale.

One of my favourite places in the whole Lake District. I just love the tranquil and natural landscape of upper Ennerdale (once you get beyond the tree felling) I had a lovely walk all the way to Black Sail hut as it brings peace and calm and plenty of views of Pillar Rock and Great Gable.

Some useful advice for the hotter days ahead. Not just for yourself but for the group you are walking with. Enjoy the hills but remember to drink and protect yourself from the sun. :-)

Its getting close to that time of year. The famous Rannerdale Bluebells are close to full bloom. It can be very hard to get the perfect day as the window is so small, however defiantly worth the visit. Good thing I only live a 15 minute drive away. Photo from last year.

Good to be back at Scales Tarn and Blencathra with Sharp Edge looking beautiful this week. There is plenty of ascent routes up Blencathra, my personal favourite is via Halls Fell Ridge which leads directly to the summit.
