Key mechanisms of hypertrophy (muscle growth) A quick biology lesson πŸ’ͺπŸ‘ΎπŸ“ˆ

- Mechanical tension: The generation of tension within working muscle fibres, which initiates hypertrophy-related intracellular signalling pathways.
- Metabolic stress: Metabolites such as lactate and inorganic phosphate initiate muscle growth when introduced into cells. They are generated in large concentrations in muscles under peak continuous tension.
- Cell swelling: The 'muscle pump' is an increase in intracellular hydration. Theory suggests that this pressure against the cell membrane and cytoskeleton is perceived as a threat to the cells integrity, resulting in an anabolic signalling cascade and reinforcement of the cell structure.

Achieving all three can be done with a combination of concentric, isometric and eccentric muscle contractions during resistance training. Contact us through the website link for more information on cutting-edge personal training programs.

Are you maximising your EPOC?

This physiological effect is called excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. Also known as oxygen debt, EPOC is the amount of oxygen required to restore your body to its normal, resting level of metabolic function (called homeostasis).

OXYGEN DEBT = ENERGY USE = CALORIES BURNED = FAT BURNING

The most efficient way of maximising EPOC is through anaerobic pathways I.e. High intensity resistance training. It means stepping out of your comfort zone and pushing your body and mind.
