I've just had a wonderful weekend at with family. Waking up surrounded by trees, bike rides and walks in nature, swimming, tennis, adventure playgrounds, good food and company. We didn't want to leave!

I feel like I really switched off, peaceful and content. It wasn't just being away from home, and nestled in nature, but also the phone free aspect. I usually take weekends off social media, but I'll still check messages and emails. There wasn't enough 5G or 4G to read these, unless you go to the village centre for WiFi. So I actually took a mental break from it. It was interesting to notice how often I thought of using my phone to look something up, or check emails in a quiet moment. But also how quickly I broke the habit. All of us were just using phones for photos and otherwise unobtrusive. I might not be able to bring back the forest or the playgrounds but I can't bring back some presence with better boundaries around my phone.

"Now look towards your front toes." 🫣🤣 I have to laugh at myself sometimes, it made me chuckle to imagine the corresponding "back toes" or maybe side toes ! I said this last week - I meant "big toes" but sometimes these alternatives come out of my mouth.

What's the funniest thing you've heard your yoga teacher say?

As you might guess, I love yoga. I want my children to too, but they aren't always as keen as me! Here are some of the things I use at home to get them engaged in the postures and breathing:

Games - You can buy lots of ready made kids yoga games, but there are some you can do for free! e.g.
⭐Roll a dice and balance on that number of body parts
⭐Musical statues and freeze in a given pose
⭐Mirror me - take turns to copy your partner

Stories - ready made yoga stories, or a classic, you can weave yoga poses into many children's books. Or make up your own story if you are inclined! With younger children I use animal stories as many classic postures are based on nature.

Songs - again good for younger children. Sing a song and do the poses alongside. Some favourites are Old Macdonald Had a Farm (or a Zoo, or a Jungle!) or The Wheels on the Bus for big arm circles and windscreen wiper legs.

Competition - Works well for older or competitive children.
⭐Who can hold tree pose the longest?
⭐ Can you race across the garden jumping like a frog?
⭐ Can you hold wheel or downward dog whilst I crawl under? (Kind of what's pictured - we're playing "Rock, Bridge, Tree" which is a little long to explain here !)

Be the change / Model - Roll out your mat and do your own practise. They might copy or join in. (You have to accept that it won't be a quiet peaceful practise!)

Props - the breath can be too abstract for children. Using a prop such as bubbles or tracing up and down the fingers, can help children to focus on their breath.

Overall, keep it short and sweet. Ten minutes here and there to keep their attention. I'd love to hear if you try any of these, or have any good ideas to share!

I'm lined up to do lots of kids yoga over the next few summer months. Check out my website, newsletter or wait for the next post. Booking essential!

Join me for this free introduction to Menstrual Cycle Awareness, or MCA. Whether you have been practising this for a while or completely new to it, or perhaps interested for when cycles return postnatally, you are welcome.

This will cover:
🌹a grounding meditation
🌹how to track your cycle, including my one-page tracker
🌹an introduction to the Inner Seasons as set out by .school
🌹ways to bring cyclical living into your daily life
🌹recommended reading to learn more

There will be opportunity for sharing and questions.

This is such an important knowledge for anyone with a menstrual cycle that I want to share it for everyone.

To follow this, I will be holding a yoga workshop in October on how your yoga practise can support your MCA and vice versa.

Soothing or regulating the nervous system is helpful to get us out of the stress response system, "fight or flight" (see my previous post). This isn't to say we need to be constantly calm, it is natural to have every day worry, excitement and fluctuations. The aim isn't to remove all stress, it is helpful at times! But by giving the body time in the "rest and digest" zone, we can recover from stressful situations and then the body can function effectively.

I may be biased, but yoga and hypnobirthing are excellent at helping the nervous system. If you'd like guidance from a prenatal teacher then come along to my classes on Tuesdays at The Yoga Tree or Old Catton.

What helps you the most?

This post is for suggestions to work on at home, at your own discretion. If you are need of support with chronic stress or anxiety please speak to your midwife, GP or perinatal mental health team.

*New Blog* - Positive Birth Stories 💕 "I honestly didn’t know I had the level of strength within myself to give birth with zero pain relief just by using the water, movement, breathing a surrounding myself with positivity. I really hope more and more people share positive birth experiences so birthing is not something to be feared but celebrated! Woman’s body’s are incredible!"

Recently I asked previous clients of mine for their positive birth stories, and what I received back was breath taking! I have compiled these into a blog, as like my client above, I think it's so important to share these. The blog features births in the midwife led unit, delivery suite (including induction), and home births. Showing that a positive experience of birth doesn't have one set path. (I have also had many positive C-section stories though none in this blog yet.)

Thank you to all who shared your story 🥰

Postnatally we can easily find ourselves in "fight, flight or freeze" mode, often without realising. With less sleep, changes in our life, isolation as a new mum, hormonal changes, we may be more anxious or stressed than before. It's the body's way of coping with the new dangers we see in the world! So I believe it's even more important to find ways to regulate our nervous system, to "find calm" - whether through releasing stress tension, breathwork, muscle relaxation.

This was the theme for our first Baby and Postnatal classes in our new location. 🥰 Lovely to see familiar faces returning and a few new ones.

Adventurous Babies explored the Farm animals and we integrated postures into Old Macdonald. 🐄

You can join us on Week 2 next Thursday at 10am or 11am.
