Throw back Friday… I get asked about the trophy’s that are displayed in the shop quite regularly some of which date back to 1985!
I was privileged to belong to a junior angling club called the silver dace, a Bristol based club based in Bristol who catered for young anglers paying an interest in fishing with a bit of competition involved, including fishing matches on our own Bristol Avon as well as matches away.
Back then we would meet at St George’s park get onto a coach and fish Lovley Natural venues like the river huntspill, king sedgmore drain and many others …
Inset picture are wares won during a particular year me and a good friend in the club cleared up!with the various matches we fished through the season, including highest points scored, biggest fish, club champion most improved, biggest fish and places earned to fish National events,some of the trophies are still in the shop today … The one on the left had hair back then !!! 😊great times and only one keepnet needed 🎣it’s been a lifetime of Happy

Today five Fish and Field customers attended Harescombe fisheries to do battle for bragging rights on there Pasture lake.
A small lake containing lots of silvers including roach,bream, Rudd, perch and some lovely Tench…
Our hosts for the day Gary and Catherine who run the fishery welcomed us with a lovley breakfast and a cup of tea..then for the draw at 8.30
Warm conditions through the day made fishing tricky with the skimmers hard to catch in the bright sunshine however we all had plenty of bites.
My weight for the day was 13lb mostly skimmers plus a Lovley Tench..for second place😊
Andy Lord ran away with the match catching some Tench plus skimmers and roach for 33lb…
After the weigh in we headed back to the cafe for burger and chips.
Today was a tester for more planned matches through fish and field at Harescombe in the future.
My own round up for the day is to thank Gary and Catherine for there warm welcome and providing a spotlessly beautiful venue that caters for everyone who loves fishing.
Lastly thanking Tony for his help on booking the venue and believing it’s just fishing and getting together with friends no matter how big the match..🎣

Quick catch up… hope everyone is enjoying the weather and managing to get out fishing.
Well indeed you are, very busy week last week welcoming our customers through the door including many new customers who have just started or getting back to it because the kids are nagging to get out!and again I keep saying it but lots of younger participants are showing an intrest to which is great….
May I take the opportunity to thank for their continued supply of Vertex Whips which have captured the hearts and fascination of what fishing brings…
Something a bit different now.. moving into next week we will be having a trial match at the lovely on one of there smaller lakes pasture ..on Sunday
It’s a big match ! Six anglers who by invite from the shop will battle it out fishing for many of the big silvers that live in the lake… I got my way !!
This will be hopefully path the way for many more matches planned next year on other lakes Harescombe offer.
This year already we have sold out of tickets for our annual Christmas match at the venue 37 strong… all proceeds going to the Wallis and Gromit appeal 💚

As we enter into our busiest period we see a real mix of anglers coming into our store, lots of questions get asked on a daily basis especially regarding bait…
Whilst maggots, casters, worms and pellets will catch most fish commonly we get asked about Groundbaits or feed baits, in context this initial feed will attract the fish into your peg-swim to begin with”getting the fish there”
Then it’s a case of feeding extra feed baits to keep the fish intrested, but not to much as you need to keep the fish competing for the food.. indeed then your given hook bait …
There are hundreds of baits on the market which all work to good effect on there given day.
Here at fish and field and whilst a bit bias recommend Sensas Groundbaits and pellets which will cover everything from silver fish on natural venues and commercial waters to big carp …on any venue that holds them…
Our Senses range is growing not just through the Tonic it provides but by popular demand as well as my own experience with the baits … 💚🎣

Whilst Matt and the team make sure we have everything we need ready for the weekend, Steve are delivery driver doesn’t just drop off the bait, he likes to stop for a short while discussing many of the conversations this wonderful sport has to offer including best paste presentations etc 👍😊on a serious note Steve and gang we couldn’t operate with out you…💚
In an ever growing harder world as an independent shop we thank M5 Angling for their ongoing support and Quality bait and tackle they provide.

School is out for the summer and I can’t believe the amount of younger anglers we have had through the door this weekend 👍some of which who have all ready had a go at fishing and others who are trying it for the first time… I remember the first time I went fishing and was instantly hooked, by the age of 11 I was fishing matches with the silver dace juniors which then catapulted me into bigger matches and then a chance to fish for the junior Bristol team in the junior nationals which in 1987 we won on our own water the Bristol Avon…
Although back then and later on match fishing was life and it’s easy to forget what fishing is all about, solace,time and appreciation of surroundings and most importantly the fish you are catching,nowadays I do just that …
Moving forward may I thank M5 Angling Ltd for there continued support with bait…..we sold some this weekend!!
