Tibshelf Tournament Day!

Today our Phoenix went to Tibshelf Tournament for a day of football. Looking at the sides participating, we knew it would be a tough day but football is football, so we dove in!

First up, a very technical FDNA team, out of whom we ground out a draw. The unstoppable force met an immovable object in terms of their balance and trickery Vs our physicality and route 1 football.

Next, a Westfield side, aggressive and powerful, hitting us with a 2-0 defeat.

An Eastwood team followed, an U9s team playing up a year, who were exceptional and handed us a 4-1 defeat. No complaints, sometimes, you just get beaten by a better team! 🤷🏻‍♂️

Sherwood Colliery Warriors held us to a 0-0 draw, with some great football from both teams making it tough to get a winner. A highlight was a superb save from , standing in as third keeper after suffered a finger injury in the previous game. AA17 absolutely flew to the top corner to deny a wonder goal!

Our final group game was against a strong Collingham Lions side who, despite conceding and early penalty, gave us a hell of a game and ultimately came out 2-1 winners, though if it wasn't for some heroic goalkeeping and tough defending may have found themselves a few more goals to the good.

Through to the Conference Semi-Final, we faced a familiar foe in Tupton Ivanhoe Amber, a regular game in our league. We love playing Tupton as it's always a tight game, historically swinging either way and this time was no exception. Tipton got off to a spectacular start, going two goals up though we fought back and grabbed a goal later on. Throwing caution to the wind, we piled the pressure on gambling for an equaliser but not this time, as Tipton progressed to the final and we dropped to the third place play-off.

In a full-circle, we met FDNA again and this time the game was completely different... FDNA had come alive and were heaping pressure on our defence for almost the full 12 minutes, but through solid defending, goal line clearances, astute goalkeeping and pure team work we kept them at bay and at the final whistle, the score was 0-0 and the game went to penalties.

Six brave kids stepped up to the spot, three scored, and three hit the posts to give us a 2-1 penalties win and secure that third place bronze medal for the day!

The team did amazingly well, working super hard for each other, playing against some tough opposition and giving maximum effort! Plenty of proud parents today and two proud coaches, well done all and a massive thank you to all the teams involved and to Tibshelf for putting on a brilliant tournament!

Managers Match Report

Heading towards the season finale now, and our players have really been getting their heads down recently and producing some impressive play!

This week we took on Chesterfield Junior Blues on the astro. Last time we played it was a very close game and we knew they could get forward and hurt us.

The referee got us going, and it looked like we were just as up for this one as we had been for the last few, straight in at them, trying to win balls, and remembering positioning. We were working well as a team, helping each other out and covering for one another - crucial when CJB had a player in particular that was very capable of punishing mistakes. The first half saw a couple of well taken goals, and as the whistle went again we brought ours in for a chat.

Back out for the second half, and it was more of the same. A long period of sustained pressure from us somehow proved fruitless but there were plenty more goals, at both ends of the pitch for the supporters and kids to enjoy.

Another fine performance from our side capped off with our very own LC25 getting on the score sheet for the first time!

Well done to both teams, extremely good fighting spirit and a great game to watch.we will see you next season CJB, all the best!

Managers Match Report

Another Saturday, and another game for The Phoenix this week as we played New Tupton Ivanhoe Amber for the third time this season at Brookfield.

Both of our previous games had been really good, really tight games of football and, off the back of some excellent work in training we were hopeful that this week we could get a result. We love the fixtures that are good battles, and go either way by a goal or two, as it teaches the kids so much more about determination and seeing it through than heavy goal swings. What did this week have in store?

Whistle blown, match underway, and predictably it was immediately on, as Tupton and Bolsover tried to break each other down and get into a rhythm. From end-to-end football, toughing it out for midfield control, and sustained pressure at both ends of the pitch this game had it all!

It was obvious that both teams had been working hard, and the standard of football had improved dramatically. Touches were cleaner, passes were tighter, defending was stone-wall! Some superb finishing from both brought us in level at the break.

Repeating our new mantra to the team of 'play the football, the goals will come', aimed at trying to discourage the forcing of shots/goals and rather to play until they happened, they went back out and the match carried on the same way, both sides putting some incredible work in. We had chances from four corners in a row, Tupton went down to our end and did the same thing. Wonderful to watch.

In the end the match was decided by an individually excellent piece of finishing from an impossible body shape - how the player got the shot away I do not know, but it was the only thing that would separate two very evenly matched teams.

Tupton were a pleasure, as always, and although we won't play them again this season I'm certain there will be friendlies over the summer! Thanks guys and see you soon!

Managers Match Report

After an unbelievable performance last week, the standard was set for this weeks game against Hasland. The instructions were simple - Play like you played last week, work like you worked last week, focus on the football and the rest will take care of itself.

The players have recently kicked up a gear with their understanding of the game, and we wanted them to show what they could do today against a side who we love to play against - from the start they have been very similar to us in their approach, we all just want to get kids playing football as much as possible and for them to enjoy it!

The whistle went, the game started, and it immediately looked like the players had listened to us - from the off they were showing the same work rate and energy from the previous week. Hasland, this week depleted by absentees, were working as hard as they could but as the game wore on they were feeling the effects of battling against our team and the hot astroturf.

Sometimes, having a large team can be a drawback, with frequent player rotations and ensuring fair minutes, but this week it was to our advantage as players could have a rest, cool down and take on water.

It was, in the end, a wonderful performance from our team and a monumental effort from the Hasland players, they never stopped fighting and giving it 100%. Thanks to Hasland for the game, and we look forward to seeing you again!

Managers Match Report

Summer has landed (for the week at least) and we were at Brookfield, hoping the sun would shine on us on a Saturday morning as we faced Tibshelf Girls, a top class team, very athletic and technically excellent... So we weren't holding our breath but this is football, and anything can happen... Can't it?

The match kicked off and we were immediately subjected to passing that Pep would have been proud of. We didn't get a touch on the ball before we fell behind within the first few seconds.

Thinking this could be a long day, the players got their heads up and found some determination... And then...

And then produced probably their best performance of the entire season so far.

Tibshelf were technically far superior, very well coached and well drilled but Bolsover played their absolute hearts out, running like elite athletes on the baking hot 4G surface, pressing every player, intercepting passes, and getting forward, and were rewarded with an equaliser early into the second half.

Both keepers were kept busy, with both showing great basics and technical ability and defenders on both sides working hard to shut attackers out. Tinshelf had the better of the game in midfield but Bolsover were keeping that door shut.

Class prevailed in the end, but if Bolsover can hold their own against such a technical team, there could be good things in the future for them and (unfortunately for them!) thats the standard from now on!

We couldn't be prouder of them yesterday, they worked so hard in the sun and met technical ability with sheer work.

Player of the Match this week went to - consistently great in every game but sometimes gets overlooked by another player having a great game, IS2 was tough, working back into position quickly and giving everything Saturday. A little run up front towards the end showed that they can keep composed and produce quality even with a change of position, and they are fast developing. Watch this space with this player!

Managers Match Report

At last, some sun for a match as we headed to the grass for this weeks game against Chesterfield Junior Blues! Having played in pre season and also in the league, this was a team we knew, and we knew that no matter what they were not about to give up… but neither were we!

Compared to the astro, the grass pitches are relatively compact and the uneven surface was causing problems for both teams with unpredictable bouncing and bobbling making it tough to control the ball, leading to a somewhat messy opening. Soon, the goals started, with both teams fighting to get on the score sheet and get ahead in the match.

The game followed a pattern, a build up of pressure from Bolsover, leading to over-commitment and a counter-attack from Chesterfield - sometimes halted by staunch defending and tracking back, and sometimes…. not.

Typically, with tight games, it began getting a little physical but as long as its fair…. we don’t mind that, and neither did Chesterfield! Both teams left nothing out there and the result in the end was a good reflection of the battling on the pitch.
