Hook & Southborough is celebrating 120 years of bowling and is the oldest Bowling Club in the borough, with match records dating back to 20th May 1905 when the first game was played between the president Dr. McNeill and Mr Judd. Membership soon rose from around 25 members to almost 70. The club use the very same green now in King Edward's Recreation Ground, Hook Road, Chessington as they did then. The only radical change made in the early days came in 1923. Club members Mr Landford and Mr May the Secretary suggested the admittance of lady members on the same terms as the men. The club record books show that it was “carried heartily” by fellow members. In more recent times, arsonists destroyed the clubhouse on the 21st January 1996 along with most of the records. Undeterred it was soon rebuilt with the help of the National Lottery fund.

Sunday 21st April, Hook & Southborough played their first game of the 2024 season away in a friendly triples match against Cobham. Cobham were one man down so we lent them our secret weapon ‘Andy’. A rather cold cloudy afternoon with no-one taking their jackets off went well with a break for tea after 9 ends. The match finished after 18 ends with Hook & Southborough winning on two rinks and Cobham winning on one. However the rink that Andy was playing on beat Hook & Southborough by a fair margin allowing Cobham to win on points. The Captains agreed that the match should be a draw and we all retired to the clubhouse for a welcome drink after a great afternoon bowling.
