Strength training after 40 is not about finding one perfect exercise.
There is a lot of advice online about the “best” exercise to do.
The best one for strength.
The best one for your core.
The best one if you are over 40.
The best one if you only have ten minutes.
The best one to stop feeling stiff.
The best one to feel stronger.
And some of it can be useful.
Sometimes a simple list gives people ideas. Sometimes it reminds people that moving and getting stronger does matter. Sometimes it makes training feel a bit less intimidating.
But I think it can also make things sound much simpler than they really are because most people do not need one magic exercise. They need training that helps normal life feel a little easier.
Picking things up.
Carrying shopping.
Getting up and down.
Walking upstairs.
Feeling steadier on your feet.
Feeling less stiff when you stand up.
Trusting your body a bit more.
That does not usually come from one perfect movement.
It comes from doing simple, useful work often enough that your body starts to feel more capable again. It also comes from knowing that things can be adapted.
Not every body needs the same version of an exercise.
Not every person starts from the same place.
Not every session has to feel the same.
That part gets missed a lot online. A video can show you an exercise. A list can give you ideas. But it cannot always tell you what is right for your body, your confidence, your history, your knees, your back, your balance, or your starting point.
That is where clear coaching matters.
It does not have to be extreme or punishing. And it does not have to look like something you saw online.
For a lot of adults, the useful stuff is much simpler than that.
A familiar place.
A clear structure.
Movements that make sense.
Enough challenge to feel progress.
Enough flexibility to keep coming back.
That is what we focus on at The London Kettlebell Club in Chessington. Small group strength training for adults who want to feel stronger, move better and keep going.
