Match Report:
After returning from his 10th holiday of the summer, Gary Robinson led the boys out for the first home game of the season. We started well with a few half chances and were on top before a sloppy bit of play out the back gave Montpellier a throw in, from the clearing header the ball fell to the Civil Service 1st team player from two leagues higher who scored from outside the box.
We rallied quickly and got our reward 10 minutes later after a switch of play out to the left to Ben Sluman who swang in a delightful ball with the foot we thought he only used for standing on, for Hadley Gilbert to fire home his first for the season. 1-1 at half time seemed a fair scoreline.
Montpellier went back in front quickly after half time after a flick on from a long throw, with Josh Ellin getting span like a beyblade before their winger slotted home. Controversially Jamie ‘Mogger’ Moore was then sent through on goal before being clipped from behind apparently just outside the box, for the referee to give a free kick and no yellow or red card.
Montpellier then added another after a cross was intercepted by our centre back before the ball unfortunately fell to their winger to tuck away. We responded fairly quickly with a deep cross from Ryan ‘Smudge’ Smith which was dropped by the Montpellier keeper and Dan Wills made no mistake from 2 yards. Wills then nearly produced a moment of magic minutes later with a 40 yard half volley which looped narrowly over the bar.
The last 10 minutes the Montpellier box was bombarded corner after corner, free kick after free kick and with a few close calls, but they defended their box very well and we couldn’t get one over the line.
Good battle from both teams and on another day a draw was probably a fair result but respect to Montpellier for getting it over the line. Thanks for staying after and we’ll see you in the return fixture 🤝
