Blueco and Chelsea suddenly changed its financial strategy for the summer 2026 transfer window. The club is no longer spending money freely under new manager Xabi Alonso. Instead of paying the exact prices that opposing teams want, Chelsea is trying to lower costs by offering smaller fees, which has caused multiple major deals to fail or stall ππββοΈ
The conservative approach first cost Chelsea the signature of midfielder Granit Xhaka. Chelsea submitted low offers that did not match his club's valuation, causing them to miss out on the player entirely.
A similar problem is now happening with Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep ChavarrΓa. Chelsea initially believed a bid of Β£12.8 million (β¬15m) would complete the deal. However, Rayo Vallecano changed their stance and demanded his full β¬25 million release clause upfront. Chelsea tried to meet the price by adding performance bonuses, but the Spanish club rejected the offer, leaving the transfer on the verge of collapsing.
Meanwhile, Chelsea's pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix remains unresolved. The 26-year-old centre-back has been a top target for the Blues. However, because Lacroix is currently playing for France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Chelsea is delaying their final decision. The club wants to see how he performs in the tournament and check their remaining budget after the World Cup before deciding whether to make an official bid.
