Old Walcountians were formed 80 years ago by the former boys of Wallington County Grammar School. The key objectives of the club are to promote the playing of rugby union and encourage sportsmanship, comradeship and enjoyment. We now run three regular teams which cater for players of all standards. Old Wal's is a club which takes its rugby seriously whilst maintaining the true rugby traditions of
friendship and humour on and off the pitch - a testament to this is the number of new players we attract each year who find a warm reception as soon as they enter our clubhouse. An atmosphere created and maintained by Julie and Monty our full time club stewards ably assisted by their part-time staff. Our superb grounds and facilities are maintained by our talented full-time groundsman Pat Hampson. At a time when grassroots rugby is in decline, Old Walcountians prides itself as a traditional club with all the essential elements that make rugby worth playing even down to an active "Codgers Corner". A brief history of the club:
We were formed in 1932, five years after the formation of Wallington County School. Few records are held of our pre-war history when we were based in Beddington Park. After the war we moved to Nicholas Road, then after a difficult period which included destruction by fire of our pavilion we moved to our present home in Woodmansterne. One of our most successful seasons was in 1958/59 when we were unbeaten. Our captain Tony Jones, was one of a number of schoolboy internationals produced under the guidance of our former president Bill Ireland who taught rugby at the school for over 40 years. In 78/79 OW's reached the final of the Surrey Cup losing narrowly to Esher. This result was eclipsed, 30 years later, in May 2009 when we beat Old Whitgiftians in the final of the Surrey Shield. South Thames Merit table twice and have also been runners up. 2009 also saw promotion, as runners up, to Surrey league 1.
