This is what you should do , though all to often we stay where we are !

When your partner gets pulled wide by a serve, the middle of the court moves with them...

Not the center service line. The FUNCTIONAL middle, the gap between you and your partner that your opponents want to redirect the ball through.

Here's the scenario: your partner gets dragged well off the court by a wide deuce serve. You're still standing where you started, slightly left of center, waiting to see what happens next.

Your instinct says hold your ground.

But the geometric center between the two of you has shifted several feet further onto deuce side. That's where the server's partner will target if they get the ball, and you're making it easier for them!

The fix is to move the same distance to the right as your partner has moved to get the serve. Do that and instead of letting the easiest possible target expand you'll shut it down.

The wide serve changes everything. Move with it!

An easy tactic to learn

There's a specific moment in doubles where your instincts betray you...

Not because they're wrong, but because you're acting on them too early.

Here's the scenario: Your partner hits a cross court return. You're standing in a defensive net position at the service line, squeezed towards the middle.

Then you get excited about attacking the net and close forward and to the right to pressure the serve.

The problem: your net opponent hasn't been passed yet! That premature shift opens a gap right through the middle of the court at the exact moment they can redirect the ball through it if your partner's return of serve isn't solid enough.

This is the pre-attack trap. The instinct to move toward offense is correct but the TIMING of it is what creates the liability.

Your job in that moment is to hold your position. Stay at the service line. The net player is still a live threat until the ball has clearly gotten past them. One beat of patience closes the gap. Moving before that moment opens it.

Red is where most players are when the net player strikes. Green is where you need to be, for just a little longer than your instincts suggest!
