What is Polyendocrine
Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome
PMOS (formally PCOS)?
Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) is a very common complex endocrine (hormonal) and metabolic condition affecting 1 in 8 women in the UK. The symptoms of PMOS can have a devastating effect on a person’s self-esteem, sense of identity and quality of life.
PMOS is much more than a condition affecting periods or fertility. It does affect different systems throughout the body and symptoms vary considerably from person to person.
Those with PMOS may experience irregular or absent periods, difficulties with ovulation and fertility, acne, excess facial or body hair, thinning scalp hair and metabolic problems such as insulin resistance. The condition can also have an impact on emotional wellbeing and quality of life.
PMOS can have implications for long-term health, including an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular and metabolic conditions. This makes appropriate support and ongoing healthcare important throughout different stages of life.
The condition was previously called Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS), but this name was misleading. You do not need to have ovarian cysts to have PMOS, and the features commonly seen on an ultrasound are immature follicles rather than true cysts.
The name Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome better reflects the wider nature of the condition: involving multiple hormonal, metabolic and reproductive pathways.
PMOS is a complex, lifelong condition that can affect health and wellbeing throughout the body.
Verity is a UK based charity for the 1 in 8 women and people living with PMOS - The condition was renamed on 12 May 2026.
Verity is a volunteer-run organisation, established in 1997 making it the longest-running PMOS organisation globally.
