SKILL ACQUISITION ✅
This is a topic I rarely see spoken on by fitness trainers in the industry. Its common for trainers to post workouts for people to try (especially during lockdown) but never explore the question that many of you will probably ask yourselves, “how am I supposed to do that?”
Skill acquisition is the process of learning how to perform complex movements efficiently. In this example, utilising a range of exercises to help improve your press-up.
- Elevated press ups : raising your hand/body positioning in order to reduce the pressure on the working muscles. This is a great base exercise because it enables you to learn the fundamentals of the movement through a reduced resistance , meaning more focus on technique. This is the same also for knee press-ups
- Stability : Exercises 2 and 3 are both shoulder-stabilising exercises to help increase strength and stability to the shoulder/deltoid as well as the core. It will help increase strength of your shoulders through via your own full body weight.
Negatives : this is an exercise in which the key focus is time-under-tension for the working muscles through the eccentric (lengthening) phase of the movement. This is familiarising the working muscles with the resistance of full-body weight.
